Publisher's summary

Lyrical, imaginative, and wholly original, this New York Times best seller with eight starred reviews is not to be missed.

Rachel Hartman’s award-winning debut will have you looking at dragons as you’ve never imagined them before....

In the kingdom of Goredd, dragons and humans live and work side by side - while below the surface, tensions and hostility simmer. The newest member of the royal court, a uniquely gifted musician named Seraphina, holds a deep secret of her own. One that she guards with all of her being.

When a member of the royal family is brutally murdered, Seraphina is drawn into the investigation alongside the dangerously perceptive - and dashing - Prince Lucien. But as the two uncover a sinister plot to destroy the wavering peace of the kingdom, Seraphina’s struggle to protect her secret becomes increasingly difficult...while its discovery could mean her very life.

"Will appeal to both fans of Christopher Paolini’s Eragon series and Robin McKinley’s The Hero and the Crown." (Entertainment Weekly)

“[A] lush, intricately plotted fantasy.” (The Washington Post)

"Beautifully written. Some of the most interesting dragons I've read." (Christopher Paolini, New York Times best-selling author of Eragon)

Excellent story, very well written

I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the fantasy genre! The author weaves aspects of murder mystery, complex familial bonds, and romance together with an obviously practiced hand. The story is intricate enough to captivate but elegantly simple enough to make for an easy and fun read. I gave this novel five stars for accessibility, character development, story, writing quality, and lore. A must read for fantasy lovers!

I am forced to write at least fifteen words in this review, but Great Imagination, Love and Wonder says it all!

Dragony romance coming of age princess

The (Aussie?) reader/performer has such an engaging, courtly voice that it dragged me through the slow start into an iron age world of a young royal music instructor and a wiggly truce between humans and dragons. Interesting "Dragon personality rules" give the drama plenty of room for exploration of relationships and the "history" of the land and peoples. How *ever* does this author know so much about so much?

Very Slow

I struggled all through this book but the ending is good. I still wouldn't recommend it.

very good overall

I personally don't like background music etc when it overlays narrative.
I have a hard time understanding narrative when there's background to it.
a movie/TV show is different bc there are gestures and lip movement to help with clarity. it's frustrating to have the background music for the last paragraph and find it suddenly have to focus harder
