Publisher's summary

Ever since she was a tiny child, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world.

Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful and perhaps malevolent spirit; and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.

With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death, and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

A tale of dark secrets, deep love and dangerous magic, Sabriel introduces Garth Nix as an exceptional new talent.

Critic reviews

"It's an epic journey in a world as richly realized as Middle-earth and much darker and bloodier than Harry's trials at Hogwarts...Tim Curry brings authority to the reading, grounding the fantastic elements with nuance of character and depth of emotion. (AudioFile)
"Rich, complex, involving, hard to put down, this first novel...is excellent high fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)
"A page-turner for sure." (Booklist)

Lovely.

I'm not a reviewer, but the story was very engaging. Loveable characters, and Tim Curry's narration is perfect and charming, as expected.

Like visiting an old friend

Sabriel is everything I remember and not at the same time. I remember fondly devouring this novel -and the series at the time- but this one stuck out to me because the protagonist was as clueless about her world as I was. The way Nix drops the world building elements so naturally had me sucked in and the genius way of using bells, sounds, and spells to tell the story of a necromancer was refreshing. Tim Curry doing all the voices added another level of world building I didn't expect but truly appreciated.

Very reminiscent of Norton’s High Hallack Cycle

A very nice coming-of-age story. As I alluded to in the title it has the feel of the Andre Norton books of the high Hallack cycle, The Year of The Unicorn in particular. Different stories but in both a young lady finds her place in a magical world against all odds.

Great series!

This book sparked my imagination and thirst to read...I can read or listen to these books over and over again. I would love to see a movie though I know it could never live up to the books

Absolutely beautiful

Garth Nixs Abhorsen is a wonderfully deep and rich tale with plenty of aspects of the world itself to lose yourself in. And the narration by Tim Curry is absolutely stellar I give this title five stares for both reasons and highly recommend it to everyone.

Fantastic

Some of the greatest world building in any book. I was immediately swept into this world and happy to be there every step of the way.

Great story, great reading

Tim Curry is really good at reading this. His rendition of Mogget is hilarious. This is one of my favorite series of books.
