Publisher's summary

Things can never be the same again.

The Spook and his apprentice, Thomas Ward, have returned to the county after a long journey and a hard battle. But their troubles are far from over. Their home has been over-run by enemy soldiers. The Spook's house is in ruins, the boggart protecting it has fled, and the malicious witches imprisoned in the gardens have escaped.

Tom, Alice, and the Spook must flee, too, across the ocean to the island of Mona. And it's on Mona that this small band fighting against the dark will face an old enemy grown terrifyingly powerful. Will they be able to vanquish an evil that crawls beneath the ground itself? At what cost?

Will Tom and the Spook ever be able to return home?

The performance is good as ever and you can find yourself easily drawn in to the book. It is an easy read because you simply will not wish to put it down, or stop listening. The development is clear and leaves you longing to know more, and the end of the book is a perfect step into the next. Highly Addicitve and Entertaining Series

I listened to book #1 at Halloween and what a treat it was! I have been listening to the series ever since - when my library ran out of audio books in this series, I joined Audible to continue the pleasure of listening to such a great story told by Welch. The stories never fail to amaze me with the descriptions of creatures of the dark. I find myself laughing at some extra grizzly details because they are just so bad. I had just grown to love all the characters when audible switched narrators. Unfortunately the last few books are told in unfamiliar voices. This REALLY impacts the experience, but at that point in the series, it would be hard to stop. I am thinking of listening to the series again.

Great series

Have read the series, now just happened to re-read this one. I would give it a top rating, but now I feel just a bit hesitant. It is a very dark series, this one included. The Spook seems too out of touch for his role - how long does it take him to figure out the jar or care for the two companions. The Witch seems too cardboardy flat - just evil like all other supermalevolent beings. Thomas seems more like Tommie. Alice is perhaps the most complex character. Still, I will some day listen to the whole series a third time.

Delaney triumphs again

Though events are as dark as they have ever been, Delaney still keeps you enthralled with his masterful writing and driving intriguing plot line. This type of "Two Towers" ultra dark and very little hope story is always difficult to pull off. Yet despite the odds stacked against the The Spook and his apprentice. Delaney is definitely aided by the wonderful reading style of Christopher Evan Welch whom I hope will continue to read all of the Last Apprentice series. I'm already eager to hear the next installment of this series.
