Editorial reviews

Editors Select, March 2013 - One perk of being an Audible Editor is that I am often lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of a much-coveted book. This was the case with Requiem – the final book in Lauren Oliver’s marvelous dystopian trilogy. And the conclusion was as brilliant as the first two books. Young Adult literature is experiencing a real renaissance right now and I’ve been reading and listening to a lot of it, but this series beats out all the others, in my opinion. Oliver’s world is creepily compelling and utterly unique, and the narration is top-notch. Even though I’ve already read Requiem I’ll be listening to it as soon as I can: Sarah Drew rivals Emma Galvin as today’s best YA voice. Emily, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

This exciting finale to Lauren Olive's New York Times best-selling Delirium trilogy is a riveting blend of nonstop action and forbidden romance in a dystopian United States.

Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has transformed. The nascent rebellion that was underway in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight.

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven. Pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels.

As Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain of the Wilds, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor. Requiem is told from both Lena and Hana's points of view. They live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.

With lyrical writing, Lauren Oliver seamlessly interweaves the peril that Lena faces with the inner tumult she experiences after the reappearance of her first love, Alex, the boy she thought was dead. Sophisticated and wide-ranging, Requiem brings the Delirium trilogy to a thrilling conclusion.

Sarah Drew as the Narrator is the bees knees

This finale to the series is full of unknown plot developments and the narrator delivers another passionate and well executed portrayal of the characters !

appreciate narrator's enthusiasm but....

i found it very difficult at times to listen, every sentence spoken with such over the top ENTHUSIASM; picture reading a note from your high school buddy where every sentence ends with 4 or 8 exclamation points, a few thrown in here and there in the middle of sentences.... just to get their point across. Story was good and once i made it through the first one (the best one imho) i had to listen to the other two.

I loved the entire series

This was another set of books that had me immediately purchasing and listening to the next book as soon as I had finished the previous one. It's a fiction, and not all together plausible story, but I didn't allow my mind to get all caught up into what did or didn't fit with reality; instead, I allowed the story to carry me away. For the hours I spent listening, I was in their world, and feeling their situation, and not my own. I love being captured by a great story, and this one didn't disappoint.

Love and hate

The book portrays love and hate and that is exactly what I thought about the listen. I liked the story but the narrator was so bad!! The drawn-out, high pitched, unpleasant sound was a struggle to listen to. If I wouldn’t have been enjoying the storyline so much I would’ve been able to finish the book.

Best one of the series

Love Sarah’s narration! Made the story really come alive. This book was written in an engaging way with the POV switching between Hannah and Laina.

Loved the series, not happy with the ending

I read this series as a teen (now mid-twenties), and wanted to kind of re-visit the books I loved with Audible. I really did love this series hearing it the second time after time had passed. Lauren Oliver is a lovely author and the thing about her is that she creates characters with depth and really gets the audience to love them. I feel like this is why a lot of people are upset with the ending. I've gotten so attached to Lena, Alex, Hana, RAVEN, Tak, etc. and it feels incomplete not knowing what will happen next. Such a good dystopian series deserves the loose ends tied and I need to know if Lena and Alex find each other and where does Hana go? Otherwise, Sarah Drew did amazing with her narrating. Her emotions are strong when they need to and it's honestly easy to depict between each character because they have their own unique voice. Off to the next dystopian series!

Didn't like the ending

What did you love best about Requiem?

It was a good story and I enjoyed 99% of it...except the ending.

What does Sarah Drew bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Sarah Drew is a good fit for Lauren Oliver's books. The first time I heard her narrate a book, I wasn't sure about her voice, but she really does have the right fit for the Delirium series. You can tell she's enjoying the story along with the rest of us.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Lena and Alex's initial confrontation was long awaited and didn't disappoint.

Any additional comments?

I can't say I hated the ending...it was okay...but it was definitely a let down for me, especially since it was supposed to wrap up the trilogy. I felt a little let down and maybe hoping that she'll write another Delirium novel to finish it properly?

Definitely Young Adult

I enjoyed this whole series, but was expecting something more from this final book. It could be a combination of the narrator and the story, but Lana's struggle with Alex is quite young. I found myself rolling my eyes at many of their interactions. I've found intimate relationships in other young adult books to be tedious, but there is usually something else to keep my interest (think Hunger Games). I was a bit bored with the wrap up to this series. Still, if you liked the other two books, I do recommend listening to this book so you can complete the story.
