Editorial reviews

Editors Select, March 2013 - One perk of being an Audible Editor is that I am often lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of a much-coveted book. This was the case with Requiem – the final book in Lauren Oliver’s marvelous dystopian trilogy. And the conclusion was as brilliant as the first two books. Young Adult literature is experiencing a real renaissance right now and I’ve been reading and listening to a lot of it, but this series beats out all the others, in my opinion. Oliver’s world is creepily compelling and utterly unique, and the narration is top-notch. Even though I’ve already read Requiem I’ll be listening to it as soon as I can: Sarah Drew rivals Emma Galvin as today’s best YA voice. Emily, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

This exciting finale to Lauren Olive's New York Times best-selling Delirium trilogy is a riveting blend of nonstop action and forbidden romance in a dystopian United States.

Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has transformed. The nascent rebellion that was underway in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight.

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven. Pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels.

As Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain of the Wilds, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor. Requiem is told from both Lena and Hana's points of view. They live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.

With lyrical writing, Lauren Oliver seamlessly interweaves the peril that Lena faces with the inner tumult she experiences after the reappearance of her first love, Alex, the boy she thought was dead. Sophisticated and wide-ranging, Requiem brings the Delirium trilogy to a thrilling conclusion.

Great book... rough ending

After reading the other two books in this trilogy, I waited rather impatiently for this final book to come out. The narration of this series is EXCELLENT. She does an amazing job of giving a unique voice to each of the important characters. The story is gripping, and will leave you wanting more every time you have to turn it off for a bit and get on with life. I found myself daydreaming about the characters and trying to imagine what would happen next.

The only reason I'm not giving it a full five stars is the ending. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but it left me wanting and a bit frustrated.. I realize this was done for a reason (as explained on the author's Facebook page), but it just didn't sit well with me. I will say, however, that this is a somewhat minor issue since the overall story, character development, and dystopian imagery is engaging and well-written.

It looks as if they are planning to make a television show from this series. Not sure how I feel about that, but you never know!

Solid Conclusion to the Series

If you ask me, the Delirium series by Lauren Oliver is better than The Hunger Games series. Don't get me wrong, I love The Hunger Games. But I think that the Delirium series is deeper. I think that Oliver writes better characters. Even the secondary characters are richer, more real, living. There's plenty of action, conflict, peril, but there's feeling and growth and purpose, too.

Requiem is a solid conclusion to Lena's story, her journey. It picks up where Pandemonium left off and keeps on moving. What I appreciate is that it constantly moves forward - the resistance and the relationships all progress to the great denouement.

I listened to the audio book, which was read with such greatness by Sarah Drew. If you like to listen to audio books, you can't get a better narration. Drew is a perfect YA narrator.

One thing - there is profanity in this one, more than in the previous two books.

It could have ended better, but still enjoyed it

I would have liked for it to go on for maybe another hour after the ending. That way the author could have wrapped up the story a little better and given us readers a little more closure. The book was really good, it just didn't feel like it should have been over yet when it ended. Even just a short epilogue a couple years into the future about where they are now would have sufficed. You can make it up in your head, but I wanted the author to say it so I could feel it and revel in it.

That aside, it is a great trilogy and I'd recommend it to anyone. I have been eagerly awaiting this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. What shall I read/listen to next?

Loved This Series

Where does Requiem rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I recently started reading Young Adult Dystopian literature. While waiting for the last Divergent book novel I decided to start this Series. Loved it! Sarah Drew is amazing. Only thing I didn't like about this book and series is the ending. But it was entertaining.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Requiem?

I like the story about Hana and how she was still true to herself. I like the conversation she had with her mom.

What about Sarah Drew’s performance did you like?

I like her voices and especially the parts of the stories when she is yelling or imitating the guys. She really brought the characters to life.

The end is a bummer.

The book was pretty good at keeping you in #suspense. But man the end was so wack. It just kind of made the whole series kind of a bummer. It wasn’t tied up very well and it didn’t give the impression that you could finish the ending in your brain. #absurd #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Great story and fantastic narration

I am 43 years old and this trilogy has become one of my favorites. It's definitely not just for young adults. Lauren Oliver's writing is captivating, but Sarah Drew's remarkable narration brings it to another level. She brought the story to life and I felt like I was right in the middle of it.

This has got to be one of if not the best books I have ever read! The series is so powerful and emotional and truly captures what it is like to fight for something. This was just such an amazing series and am so sad it is over!:( Sarah Drew did an AMAZING job capturing both Lena and Hana in this book. Just everything about it was so amazing and perfect! Bravo. Outstanding.
