Editorial reviews

Editors Select, March 2013 - One perk of being an Audible Editor is that I am often lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of a much-coveted book. This was the case with Requiem – the final book in Lauren Oliver’s marvelous dystopian trilogy. And the conclusion was as brilliant as the first two books. Young Adult literature is experiencing a real renaissance right now and I’ve been reading and listening to a lot of it, but this series beats out all the others, in my opinion. Oliver’s world is creepily compelling and utterly unique, and the narration is top-notch. Even though I’ve already read Requiem I’ll be listening to it as soon as I can: Sarah Drew rivals Emma Galvin as today’s best YA voice. Emily, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

This exciting finale to Lauren Olive's New York Times best-selling Delirium trilogy is a riveting blend of nonstop action and forbidden romance in a dystopian United States.

Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has transformed. The nascent rebellion that was underway in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight.

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven. Pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels.

As Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain of the Wilds, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor. Requiem is told from both Lena and Hana's points of view. They live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.

With lyrical writing, Lauren Oliver seamlessly interweaves the peril that Lena faces with the inner tumult she experiences after the reappearance of her first love, Alex, the boy she thought was dead. Sophisticated and wide-ranging, Requiem brings the Delirium trilogy to a thrilling conclusion.

Great!! Series!

This was such a fantastic book series! So much heart brake and so much action, lot of twists and turns. The narrators were really great as well and sometime just getting a good narrators is half the issue, it can make or brake people want to hear it. Only disappointment is that the 4 smaller books are not on auto books. I love listening to auto books because I can do what I need to do and still hear the story. But I will just have to read them this time. Looking forward to more books from this author.

Awesome series. Stupid ending.

If you have listened to the series thus far you already know its AMAZING. Obviously...so without spoiling anything, prepare yourself to hate the ending.

Best of the trilogy

If you could sum up Requiem in three words, what would they be?

Feelings, tears, hope.

What did you like best about this story?

Good pace most of the time, less silly romance than in the beginning of the series, "Take down the walls!"

What about Sarah Drew’s performance did you like?

Everything! In this book, she was given the best material she could hope for and she made it brilliant! She sounds like a very good actress.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I guess I did :) I think I finished it in a day, I was lucky I got to it on a Sunday.

Any additional comments?

Well... every narration is an interpretation that changes the way the story and the characters are percieved. I have difficulties reading text, so I only listen, which means I've had to get used to any kind of voice and narration, good or bad, as the only means of getting to the story. Consequently, I'm not picky. But I do appreciate good narrations, and Sarah Drew's interpretation definitely enriched my experience of the book. It's especially in this third volume of the series that she's really perfect! I read reviews from Amazon, of readers of the written text, complaining about the ending. But with Sarah Drew giving me the ending, I was quite satisfied. It might give answers the written text does not? Interpretation? Not sure, but I liked it. There's a wonderful short interview with her at the end, I was sorry it wasn't longer, I loved that, too!

Wonderful Series!

What made the experience of listening to Requiem the most enjoyable?

I've been waiting to hear the continuation of this story for several months... it's hard waiting for books to be released!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard question! Can't pick one... they all have their special qualities.

What does Sarah Drew bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Wow... she is unbelievably talented! She gives such depth to these characters by the way she performs their stories.. I LOVE listening to her. She has found her calling!

Any additional comments?

My 22 year old son and I started this series on a road trip... and the hours flew by! We both highly recommend this series!

Got addicted with the first one

The author kept the momentum going through all three books. Awesome job and not a difficult read, so if your looking for something a little lighter this series is a good choice.

No real closure!!!

I expect the third book in a series to give you real closure for each of the characters. Unfortunately this one does not. Too bad, I was really waiting for it to finalize a pretty good series.

Pretty good story but still disappointed

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Good time spent but hoped for much more

Which character – as performed by Sarah Drew – was your favorite?

Lana

Did Requiem inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

Without spoiling it, I was disappointed with the ending. L. Oliver had to know that the readers wanted more 'time' and info at the end. Instead I sat there wanting more. I would not read/listen to this book again because of this. The only other thing ill say is I'm team
Alex ...

Favorite book of the trilogy!

I usually hate the 3rd book in a series. I'm sure part of it is me being upset with loosing all my new character friends; but I also feel many writers get sloppy with their stories or continued character development in order to end the story. Oliver did not do that. She let the story end without forcing closures. She let her characters continue to expand and grow till the very last words.
Drew's innocence and immature voice helped create a great experience when I listened to the story too.

Great narration

Good book, great narrator. Sarah Drew is now my second favorite narrator (Lake Daniels is a strong first). She does a great job changing small details like rhythm and cadence between characters.
The book is a good, happy, hopefully ending to the series. I even bookmarked a couple of thought provoking passages.
