"Never tease anything that wants to eat you. My name is April Tate and my blood is the new gold. Vampires and hybrids have overrun my world, once vibrant with life, but now a graveyard of death shrouded in shadows. I fight to survive; I fight for my mother and brother. The journey is full of turns that I am quite unprepared for. And I'm just hoping to make it to the next Vegas sunrise..."
In a post-apocalyptic world, a viral epidemic has wiped out most of the earth's population, leaving behind few humans but untold numbers of mutated vampires. April is a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in the remains of Las Vegas one year after the outbreak. She has become a ferocious vampire killer and after her family is abducted, she goes searching for them. What she finds is a new breed of vampire, unlike any she has seen before. Unsure of whom she can trust, she discovers that her view of the world is not as black and white as she once thought - and she's willing to bend the rules to rescue her family. But in trying to save them, she may only succeed in bringing her fragile world crashing down around her.

This is a good beginning to what I hope will be a great series. For most of the book the main character April seems a little torn between being a tough, independent bad ass and a young confused girl who doesn't know what she is doing most of the time. Then towards the end she starts to finds her purpose but I still feel the insecurities in her actions. I would love to watch this character grow into herself!
The love story: I personally hate insta-love but can handle it in a fantasy setting. What I didn't love was that there was no build up or anything that made you understand this instant love. Neither of the characters seemed to feel a mental attraction to each other, it felt like they loved each other because the author said so more than showing us why. I would have loved to see a little more build up and another short scene or two where these characters get to know each other and we get to know their thoughts so we could feel the attraction a little more (if that makes sense).
I loved the story line, I like that it was different and almost like a zombie/vampire mix. This story doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger, more of an opening for what comes next which is a huge plus for me!
Narration.... I hate to say this but I am so confused by the way I feel about the narration! In the very beginning I thought I was going to hate it, she seemed a little high-strung and the recording seemed to have a little echo but as the story progressed it felt like she started to understand the characters more and did a much better job at hitting the right tones for the scenes. Her narrative voice was great through 90% of this book. The narration as a whole just felt a little uneven I guess.
I will be continuing on to book 2, so don't let my criticisms fool you, I generally liked this book
I loved this book.I really like that the author starts each book with a peek at what happened at the beginning of the vampire virus epidemic. The story of April and her families struggle to survive is unique and engrossing. The author is extremely talented at world building and creating well developed characters. The narrator did an amazing job and has a pleasant voice.I won this audiobook in an online contest and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
This I a fun Vampire action story! There are different types of vampires. Some "zombie like" vampires. And other that are more human like. If you like the Walking Dead and vamps you will love this! Fun edge of your seat listen.
I have not read the print version so I cannot answer this question.
I am a huge Walking Dead fan, and this story felt like a vampire version of that. I usually hate the blood and guts type of stories, but this story felt more like a book about the human condition. April's resilience in the face of losing her family and having to survive on her own was amazing. She was a very strong heroine.
Her voice was easy to understand and very consistent.
I listened all in one sitting.
Loved this story and I can't wait for the next book! A young woman and her family is the only humans left in the Vegas area after the a vampire like virus swept through the world. The vampires are feral creatures that have no humanity left or so they thought. This is a great young adult book. Lots of twists and turns and fast paced action.
I am Tammy Payne. I am an avid book reader and I also have a book blog :)
On a scale of 1-5 it's a 4. The narrator helped make the story easy to listen to.
I can't say that I have ever read or listened to a book with this type of story.
I have never listened to this narrator but her voice is crisp and clear and that is important when listening to a book. She was able to enact the main character perfectly.
Near the beginning of the book when April learns her mother and brother have been kidnapped. My heart broke for this young girl thrust into a life of fighting and life saving. But I was cheering her on for her incredible strength.
The story is a unique play for those who love vampires and post-apocalyptic plots alike. You are immediately plunged into this world and will be hooked off the bat. It is easy to picture yourself in the character shoes.
The character are well developed and you instantly fall in love with the heroin, April. It's a great blend of action as well as layering levels of the plot.
Anne Maries Susan Silvey is a fantastic narrator and this was the first audiobook I have heard her read. I enjoyed her tremendously!
I was immediately addicted and I am already on #3 in the series. Alexia Purdy better write #4 quickly because I am almost done!
Don't miss out - worth every second and penny. Well done.
Yes! It is an amazing story! I read it way before the audio book was available :) I will most likely both read it again and listen to it again. Love this series! Can't wait to listen to the next one!!!
There is no other series like it! There are plenty of zombies and plenty of vampires... This is the only zombie/vampire series I have ever seen or heard of. It is unique and amazing!
I listened to the book at 1.25 speed and it was really good! The only issues I had with the performance were the couple of oddly pronounced words and the accents that seemed to be a bit of a reach. I really enjoyed listening to the actress' interpretation of the main character's emotions :) Overall it was an amazing experience listening to this book!
Yes! And I wish I would have been able to... But you have to sleep sometime! I listened to it over the course of two days :)
This series must be listened to in order. This is the first book.
April is supposed to be worrying about things like college and dances and good grades... But that was the old world. At almost 18 she has spent a year taking care of her mother and 6 year old little brother... Survival is killing zombie zampire hives and scavenging for food, medicine, weapons other supplies. Most days are the same. Drive into Vegas and scrounge for supplies(killing any vampires she might find) and hurry back to the van so they can get back to the bunker before sunset... Then take shifts on watch all night long. April longs for adventure... Or maybe just another actual person... Until the day her world is ripped apart.
Full of gripping suspense and nonstop action this is an awesome post apocalyptic dystopian series. There is a smidge of romance to enhance the chilling thriller atmosphere of the book. I was very happy with the world Purdy created for her vampire plague and it's survivors. I will totally be listening to Disarming (Reign of Blood #2) or Resonant (Reign of Blood #0.5) next!
***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult listeners who enjoy post apocalytal horror adventure survival coming of age stories with a bit of romance and loads of suspense :)
