Publisher's summary

Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, 15-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two. But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs. But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?

I tried...

I hardly made it to the middle of the book and I'm not one to leave a book (or audiobook) without finishing it. Maybe I shouldn't be writing this. But I need a reminder of some kind about the narrator (Miss Stevens). It was awful! The voices were ridiculous, maybe she thought she was reading for very, very small children.
And the story? I won't even go there.

Coudn't finish it

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Give the sample a listen to hear the readers version of a male voice. If you think you can stand listening to her force her voice to an unnaturally low pitch for every male character in the book, you're stronger person than I.

Any additional comments?

Honestly the only redeeming feature of this book is that when I was describing it to my wife she introduced me to a new term that describes it perfectly.

Spunky Agency: Trope usually displayed by female protagonists. To show they are strong and powerful and independent and have agency, these women will defy all the menfolk around them and do what they want! Unfortunately, their plan/actions are so mindbogglingly foolish that rather than being empowering it instead just makes all the men look RIGHT and that she should just sit down, shut up and do what they told her.

Not even for teenagers.

Would you try another book from Jennifer Lynn Barnes and/or Eileen Stevens?

Maybe the reader, not the author.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jennifer Lynn Barnes? Why or why not?

No. Unlikely that the same author would produce any better, basic character profile stinks.

What does Eileen Stevens bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I am not sure about trying different voices to identify who is speaking, but I may try another book read by the same reader and may have a better experience.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Raised by Wolves?

Alot of the repeating "blood, blood, blood" and other of the main characters repetitive thoughts.

Any additional comments?

Young people and young women in particular does not need this type of heroine. I would reckommend Pippi Longstocking, honestly. At least she has some fortitude. Brin is a stupid and self centered girl, more than most teenagers, that plunge ahead and create havoc around her, again more than most teenagers. Her "gift" is what saves the day, wereas most teenagers do not have any gifts but rather alot of resources that encouraged certainly can help them a) not get into trouble and b) if trouble strikes use them instead of hoping for a miracle. In addition I would say that this type of female protagonist is old hat, very old and very mouldy and very unappetizing old hat.
