What the Critics Say

"Riveting." (Booklist)

“Westerfeld has built a masterfully complex and vivid civilization. His characters are multidimensional, especially Tally, who wrestles with what she has done in the past and what she will be forced to do in the future. Uglies and Pretties are both nearly impossible to put down.” (School Library Journal)

“Riveting and compulsively readable, this action-packed sequel does not disappoint. Just as good as its predecessor, it will leave fans breathlessly waiting for the trilogy’s final volume.” (ALA Booklist)

    "Great Story"

I love this series, it makes a lot of statements about our society and where we are heading environmentally and also with our fascination with everybody having to look beautiful to be accepted. There are times where I find myself starting to nitpick holes in the feasibility of the society structure, but the story is well written and the plot is fun and exciting enough for me to just put that down to my being old and looking for things to complain about. I do wish Tally was more assertive, and adventurous on her own instead of being dragged along for everything and then being given credit for being in the forefront. I did enjoy the book and I continued to read the entire series and I enjoyed all of it.

"Another great story, another painful narration"
What made the experience of listening to Pretties the most enjoyable?

The narrator's take on Shay's voice was like nails on a chalkboard. Almost made me turn it off the first time I heard it however the story grabbed me enough to keep me listening despite the fact that I cringed every time Shay spoke.

Would you be willing to try another one of Carine Montbertrand???s performances?

    No

"I should have read the reviews first"

I read the first book 'Uglies' and decided to listen to the second book 'Pretties'... I am on chapter 4, and am struggling with listening to the narration. I wish I had read the reviews of the narrator prior to downloading this book. I have tried speeding the book up to 1 & 1/2x, but still this narrator is painful to listen to. I agree with some of the other reviewers about assuming the audience are morons... the narration speed doesn't help at all. Hopefully I can listen to this book quickly.
Note: I will be reading the print version of book 3 & 4 going forward (unless there is a different narrator)

    "More engaging than the first"

I am going to have to disagree with most of the other reviewers -- I actually enjoyed the second book more than the first. I almost did not continue with the series (especially seeing as how the titles and blurbs are giant spoilers and thought I knew what to expect), but I am glad I did. Yes, ok, the narrator is a little... undesirable... but the story itself ended up being a lot different than what I expected. Trying not to spoil anything, I expected Tally to be and do the exact opposite once she became Pretty; it was a nice surprise to find her being a strong character considering how much she was pushed around in the first book.

Audio books are my new favorite thing, I'm catching up on so many books. If you know any good dystopia novels, please recommend them to me!

"Nice 2nd book, but is a 3rd really necessary?"

I liked that this second book kept me listening and wasn't slow at the start. There were a lot of good exciting scenes but the story development was a little odd. There were a few events that seemed a bit random but it still kept me listening.

I'm interested to see what the third book has to offer but I almost wonder if the series could have been wrapped up with this book. The ending gets a bit "back and forth, back and forth" so I wonder if a third book was really necessary. But I'll give it a listen nonetheless.

    "Not bad"

My son and I were reading the Uglies and continued to read the next book in the series. Still really a good read, new characters and a different side to the story. Good read and still sucks you in.

    "Great writer - terrible reader"

Seriously amazing that a man wrote this. Totally gets the "girl" thing. But the reader is so slow seriously takes at least twice as long to listen. Two of us from book club have not had time to sit down to read so downloaded first 2 books. What a mistake. I actually listened to most of it. The reader is so slow that you quit listening. She did quit finally and asked for someone to "tell" her the ending. I love audible books but will not be hearing the rest of this series. Two books is enough!! I will be sure to search for a different reader in the future!!

    "Someone please shut her up!"

The fact that I was able to listen to this entire book in spite of the extremely annoying whiney tone and patronizing voice inflections of the narrator demonstrates the strength of the story. With another narrator I would rate this book much higher.

    "OK...book two of three."

I enjoyed Uglies (book one in this series) but did not find this one as interesting. I too agree that I had trouble with the character of Shay - not because of the narrator but I could not understand her continued behavior with regards to her feelings toward Tally. Based on book one it seemed out of character. I also got really tired of everything being so "bogus".

I found it too started to drag on for me but then at the end there is another cliffhanger and so you are left wanting to read book three Specials.
I was glad though that it was only a trilogy and I stopped there.
