Pirates!

Nancy Kington, daughter of a rich merchant, suddenly orphaned when her father dies, is sent to live on her family's plantation in Jamaica. Disgusted by the treatment of the slaves and her brother's willingness to marry her off, she and one of the slaves, Minerva, run away and join a band of pirates. For both girls the pirate life is their only chance for freedom in a society where both are treated like property, rather than individuals. Together they go in search of adventure, love, and a new life that breaks all restrictions of gender, race, and position.

    Overall
    "Excellent book, terrible narrator"

I want to give the book itself a 5 star, and the narrator 0, but ther is no option for that. When she does other accents she is fine, but as the narrator's voice her Rs are lazy ('woom' instead of 'room') and she is very robotic in places, pausing, or not pausing at odd times and slurring words. I'm dyslexic (hence audible), and I have empathy for speech impedaments, but that's not the case here. As I said, when in a character's accent/voice she is fine. I believe it is a dialect of some sort and inexperience that is coming through. It makes listening as confusing for me as trying to actually read the book. Having said that, Ceila Rees is fantastic and I'm actually going to abandon this audiobook and read her book- quite an undertaking for me- as the narrator is that bad. This is a real shame. What an injustus to Pirates! and Celia Rees. Please look for reviews on Amazon of the book, as this is sadly more to do with the awful reading :(
