Publisher's summary

Rigg is well trained at keeping secrets. Only his father knows the truth about Rigg’s strange talent for seeing the paths of people’s pasts. But when his father dies, Rigg is stunned to learn just how many secrets Father had kept from him - secrets about Rigg’s own past, his identity, and his destiny. And when Rigg discovers that he has the power not only to see the past, but also to change it, his future suddenly becomes anything but certain.

Rigg’s birthright sets him on a path that leaves him caught between two factions, one that wants him crowned and one that wants him dead. He will be forced to question everything he thinks he knows, choose who to trust, and push the limits of his talent... or forfeit control of his destiny.

Critic reviews

"The implications of the boys' power to manipulate the past unfold cleverly…, feeding into the Machiavellian political intrigue for a pulse-pounding climax….Card's many fans will be thrilled by this return to his literary roots.” ( Kirkus)

Good story

I got lost on some parts of the book because of the time jumps but once I made the connections it made sense and I enjoyed it. Some people don’t like multiple narrators but I do.

not the best orson scott card, but still good

I'm sure reading it would have been better because you pick more things up and not as easily distracted, however I did really appreciate the acknowledgment by Card at the end which helped clear some things up for me, especially going into book two

Interesting and enjoyable

The story is very intriguing. I has a really enjoyable coming of age space and other world quality for the pre-teen to teen MC. I really liked the two supporting soldiers who give the story a way for olders readers to enjoy the book. I am interested in seeing is the story changes are continues in the same writing styles and if the teen are older in the next book.

Good story, but who the heck is Knox?

An engaging story, especially when not bogged down in politics.

About 2/3 of the way through, the character "Knox" is referenced out of the blue. I have no idea who that character is, it's like there were two different versions of the book that narrators were using.

I greatly enjoy narrations by Stefan Rudnicki and Scott Brick to the point I've "read" other audiobooks just because they narrated them.

OSC is fabulous

Narrator's were great, although I like the first more than Umbo's. Great story with lots of scientific conversations that are very intriguing for anyone interested in astronomy, time travel, and space travel. Not my first time reading this book/series, and won't be my last either!!

insane narration

Oh boy. The quality of the narration wasn't bad but they switch voices so often and so randomly that it's jarring and takes you out of the story. If I didn't already know and love this story enough to tune out the ridiculous mix of narration, I don't think I would've finished.

Then and now

I read this book back in high-school, probably around 2004 and loved it. read the whole series back to back. Fast forward to 2022 and I'm listening to the audio version, and I'm loving it just as much as I did back then. Card is an amazing author with awesome stories.

The birth of new superheroes?

Mr cards grasp of the complexity of the nature and history of humanity can be an educational journey for the reader.

Very intriguing listen!

Very enthralling book as usual from Orson Scott Card.
The story was pretty compelling early and left me ready to resume the story often.
