Publisher's summary

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials - engineered organic beings identical to humans - has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them - connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question - one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

Enjoyable story line! kept me interested.

It took a little getting used to at the beginning. I'm used to listening to a male narrator. Once I got into the story I enjoyed the developing story line.

Great story, boring narration

I love this book series. I'm happy I read it before purchasing the audiobook - if I had chosen the audiobook first, I wouldn't have finished the series. Narrator would be better suited to nonfiction, there was no performance or fluctuation of voice pattern. Bland performance, great book series.

Eh

Story was decent. Performance was good, her "male" voice is kinda funny. I prolly won't pickup the other books unless they are on sale.

Loved it!

Totally fell in love with the characters. I think they shoved a lot of different things into this book that weren't very well played out and wasted time exaggerating scenes that didn't really matter. I already read great reviews about book two so I'm looking forward to see the improvement from book one.

NOW I NEED THE MOVIES!!

SO SO SO GOOD!! I'm a bit bummed how the third one ended ONLY because I wanted more!! so much more. it was AMAZING, great story, great writing. one of my new favorite post-apocalyptic sort of books. combining humans and super advanced robots that are practically human. I love the interchanging relationships throughout the entire book and how it all comes full circle in the end.

Struggled to finish

Interesting premise, but the suspension of disbelief required to accept the writer's world is more than I can manage. The characters are all too one-dimensional, their actions too predictable, and the outcomes too far fetched. It took me two weeks to finish the last two hours because I just wasn't engaged any longer.

The author could use a bit more range in his dialog scenes. Plenty of "he said" and "she said" when "she sneered" or "he shot back" would've added more life to the exchanges.

Julia Whelen did a good job on the narration. Not great, but certainly good.

While I'm curious to see where this story goes, I won't be reading further.

Nice voice acting. Surprisingly bad story.

Do you like the John Cleaver series? Maybe the Zero G series? You'll probably dislike this novel. He manages to take an obnoxious or inherently unlikable character and make them interesting. In his other works, the characters become relatable. In this book, the protagonist starts off as a regular person and turns into an absurd Karen. The only remotely likable character is a retired marine who she repeatedly bullies and attacks. There's a twist at the end that's interesting (gives me a little hope for the sequel). I only finished because I read his other books. If you're a fan of his books, do yourself a favor and read any of his other works before this one.

Laugh out loud ridiculous.

I struggled to finish this. The 16 yr old main character makes stupid decisions repeatedly, all while gaining respect from peers and adults. There are some unseen twists towards the end, which is good. You have to get through the ridiculous bits to get the exciting end though. My husband and I really did laugh out loud at a couple of points in the story because they were so ridiculously stupid. Overall, the story idea is great, but the execution isn't great. I would not recommend this book.
