Publisher's summary

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials - engineered organic beings identical to humans - has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them - connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question - one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

So far best written dystopian novel

Post-apocalyptic novel with intelligence and maturity. Only a small amount of the typical blind heroism that most dystopian novels display. But this is non stop and no mush.

good, but narrator put me to sleep.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, but I would recommend the book.

What didn’t you like about Julia Whelan’s performance?

She was so monotone and mundane for this book. It drove me crazy, because I loved the way she narrated the Sweep series. But this was like she was trying to tell a four year old the story. It was so annoying. It almost seemed as if she wasn't interested in the book at all. So sad. I wish it were possible to choose from a list of narrators.

Living through the nearly complete collapse of the world's civilization.

To win a world war and to make lots of money, a company makes Partials, who are living thinking soldiers who are nearly identical to humans. After the war is won Partials are left on their own and feel neglected and disenfranchised. They wage war on humans nearly making them extinct. The story follows one girl and her friends as she tries to find a way for both groups to survive and prosper. After a battle with a band of Partials she gets acquainted with Samm and learns they are not so different. Some scary and cruel events also some heartening and humerous events make the story hard to put down.

Easily imaginative story very visual

I really enjoyed the storyline, it always takes a few chapters to get use to the voices of female to male and visa versa, not shading. I even listened on my Fire TV one weekend. I plan to stay the other book later on this evening, thank you, great job reading Julia Whflan you really nailed Kira.
