Publisher's summary

Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight. To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols - those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground.

The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

A "Bodice Ripper" wrapped in a "Body Slasher"

This novel is fast paced and full of great imagery of the strong and courageous Deuce and her 2 beaus. Not too lengthy, just the right amount of gory, bloody fight scenes and intertwined with those, the somewhat victorian love story. If you think about it; In those days, they did have to often fight in hand-to-hand combat too, vs. today's WMDs.

I am, at the moment, really into the current wave of post-apocalyptic drama. I just consume them as fast as they come out, mixing flavors, if they are any good... as many of them have turned out to be. I read Enclave, then Angelfall, then Outpost. For me it turned out to be the perfect complement of ernest dramedy and satire/comedy. That was great fun and entertainment; just what I needed.

I am not giving 'Outpost' the full 5 stars, because I don't think it deserves the 5, due to the fact that I found several of the inner monologues too long, boring. I also did not find it as innovative as others of it's kind, even though it has the potential. There is a lot of basically phantasy stuff that the reader just has to accept.

Overall recommended as enjoyable entertainment.

Narrator Bad // Book So-So

There are so many great reviews for this book and I feel kinda alone on this one so bare with me. Outpost had great potential, and there are times it really lived up to it, and times I wanted to fast forward. Once I was at the middle of this book it was a little bit...ummm...boring? I don't know it just wasn't what I expected.

Seeing that Deuce lived underground in a society that made up it's own rules and brainwashed it's people I was excited to see her paradigm shift. It felt as though it was going to be reminiscent of Plateo's "The Cave." It wasn't. The most she wondered about was why you celebrated birthdays and "who says I cant wear pants!" All of her "paradigm shifts" were quite shallow.

Romance is weak and there is a pointless love triangle once again.

The book starts to redeem itself towards the end and leaves you with quite the cliffhanger. I think the final installment in this series has the setup to be the best yet. Here's to hoping!

OH! Most importantly the narrator is bad. I honestly wonder if I would have felt completely different about this book had I read it instead...

Loved the First Book, This One is Even Better!

Outpost is action from start to finish. This book does not have a dull moment. There is a love triangle, zombie-like creatures, and family dynamics, to name a few elements. The narrator was good, but the accents were a little inconsistent. At one point they sound like they are from Boston, the next like they are from the South. But that is a small complaint because overall it was great. The hard part is now waiting for the third book, Horde, to come out!

Good story. Very bad narration

I really enjoy the story. But I wonder if I would have liked it more if I read it instead of listened to the audio book. I really did not enjoy the narration.

If men can do it so can Women!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would. I think it really shows to young girls not to let ppl say that they cant do something just because they are female.

Any additional comments?

This was a really good book. I tried this series on a whim and it paid off. I love how Deuce doesnt let anyone tell her that she can't do something because she is female. How she stands up for what is right. The bonus is the love triangle she finds herself in. I cant wait to see what happens next!

Second Book in a Series Syndrome

If it looks like a duck and acts like a duck, then it must be a . . . well Outpost is the second book of a series and it acts just like one!
Outpost is repetitive - for the reader who did not bother with Enclave it must be great, for me - not so much.
Outpost also ended like the second book of a series - push me out to the edge and leave me there hanging, for me - too painful.
And for me, a sap, I'm not happy when you mess with relationships that need not be messed with.

So, I give Outpost a 3.5...

Enjoyable

Not the best of the best story I've heard, but I like the twist and the books are growing on me. I wasn't excited about any love triangle stuff, but it isn't too bad and there's a lot more to the story.

frustrated

I really like the books...However this second in the series has alot-ALOT- or complete verbatim flash backs that make it really hard to pay attention especially if you listen to one right after the other.
