When Lee and his daemon, Hester, land in the Arctic town of Novy Odense, they quickly become embroiled in an out-and-out political brawl. So when Iorek offers to help, Lee is only too happy to accept. Together they take on a slippery politician, his monstrous gas-powered gun and a murderous gunfighter. And so begins a friendship that will continue throughout their lives.

Once Upon a Time in the North is an awesome short about Lee Scoresby's visit to a small town in the Arctic, where he meets Iorek Byrnison for the first time. A fun listen which is written and narrated by Philip Pullman and includes a full cast of actors voicing the characters. I absolutely loved it. The story compliments His Dark Materials trilogy brilliantly.
"Enjoyable story and great narration"
We choose this because we have enjoyed Philip Pullman's Northern Light Series and also one of us had read this book previously and enjoyed it.
Its a great audio book with great narration, its really nice having a book which is read by several different people for the characters in the book and is really enjoyable to listen too.
We would happily recommend this book to all and if you liked his Northern Light books then you'll like this as well, as they have several of the same characters in this book.
"Good, but not up to His Dark Materials"
An interesting yarn, but don't expect the knife edge excitement of His Dark Materials. Good enough in it's own way, but disappointing when you are expecting so much from this author.
"Glad I heard this one!"
Philip Pullman's "Once Upon A Time In The North" is one up there along with "His Dark Materials". Because the story is narrated by the full cast & has detailed descriptions, it makes you feel like you're actually there & then, seeing it happen with your own eyes. It is sort of like having a little voice narrating the picture that is forming in your head. I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes action & emotion.
"A great return to the world of 'His Dark Material"
I loved the 'His Dark Material' trilogy. I loved the world that Philip Pullman created there, and I was eager to return to that world, but also a bit worried. Would this book live up to my high expectations? It sure did. There is less space for Mr Pullman to create a story as complex as His Dark Materials, but the quality of the writing is just as good, and the world just as fascinating.
"Good but too short"
Bit disappointed that i used 1 credit for 2 hours worth of entertainment. It was a very good short story but in my opinion ends too quickly and leaves a few more unfinished character developments. I would rather had more of the main story than the strange closing extracts.
"Good book very well read"
As with the other Philip Pullman audiobooks that I have listened to the narration is excellent, the different voice actors really give depth to the characters in my opinion and the main text being read by the author really helps to make it come alive.
The audiobook is an excellent chance to get a glimpse into Lyras world (from the point of view of Lee Scorseby) and to learn a bit more about Lee, with a little bit of a mystery and some interesting characters and ideas. In short: a nice little audiobook and his dark materials fans will especially like it.
"Great bonus to his dark materials :D"
If you're a fan of 'His dark materials' you will enjoy listening to this 2 hour story. I Loved this little bonus which gives a pre Lyra story about Lee Scorsby and Yurik Burnison (sorry if I have spelt the names wrong- I've never seen them printed).
"Pullman strikes gold again!"
I absolutely loved it. Phillip Pullman makes a great narrator and the story is a tantalizing tidbit into the history of HDM- hopefully The Book Of Dust will be out sooner rather than later
