Obsidian: Lux, Book 1 | [Jennifer L. Armentrout]

Obsidian: Lux, Book 1

When 17-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she'd pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy Internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up...until he opened his mouth. Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It's hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot guy next door? Well, he's an alien.

Turns out that Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities and Katy is caught in the crosshairs. Daemon's touch has lit her up like the Vegas Strip and the only way she's getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until her alien mojo fades. That is, if she doesn't kill him first.

What the Critics Say

"The beginning of Armentrout's new Lux series is a thrilling ride from start to finish. A cross between Roswell and Dawson's Creek, this series is guaranteed to hold your attention and have you begging for more." (Romantic Times)

    "Holy Alien Hotness"

This book has been described as "Twilight with aliens", which didn't sound appealing to me at all. However, based on all the 5 star reviews and hype for this book I went ahead and gave it a try. WOW did this book surprise me. It's witty, fast-paced, full of action and mystery and some very swoon-worthy scenes. I am a huge fan of YA romance books and this one is quickly rising to the top of my favorites list. This series is so addictive and fun that I've already downloaded books 2, 3 and 4. I'm going to be in listener heaven now.

    5 stars!!

    Story
""Twilight" as it should have been written"
What made the experience of listening to Obsidian the most enjoyable?

The storyline is wonderful, full of emotion and tension, and the writer truly knows how to use the language to transport you there. Unlike Stephanie Meyer, Armentrout has way more than 5 words in her vocabulary, and is not repetitive or banal. She writes the narration equally good as the conversations.

What other book might you compare Obsidian to and why?

"Twilight" as it should have been written. The story is pretty much the same, even with same events, but aliens instead of vampires and the lead female character is not lame and absurd.

How could the performance have been better?

This reader simply cannot do male voices. She sounds ridiculous in a male role, and one must be able to ignore her shortcomings not to lose interest in the overall story. You also cannot tell one female character from another, but luckily, there are not many situations in which conversation is written in a way that characters are not differentiated by narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Definitely laugh. There is plenty of good humor here, and the sense of loss is well described.

    Any additional comments?

This is NOT a YA book, as one reviewer already observed.

    "Eagerly awaited on Audible!"
    Any additional comments?

I stumbled upon this book looking while looking for an entertaining read for my kindle and it was one of those "wow... I'm so glad I found this!" moments. As soon as I read it, I immediately went to Audible and was broken hearted when I found it wasn't available for download yet. I've been stalking Audible since then, eagerly awaiting this book's release and at last! The day has arrived! Why did I like this book so much? The main characters tend to bring out the worst in each other and that made for an entertaining read. And though there is romanitc interest, neither character wants it... nothing about their relationship is easy and they fight their attraction tooth and nail. Not that I have anything against love at first sight, but this was a nice change of pace. The sarcastic banter really makes this story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes YA romance series. I think, like me, you'll find it's well worth your time and you'll join the ranks of those of us eagerly awaiting the next release in July.

    "Narrator was terrible!"

The narrator ruined this book for me! I might buy it in print to see how it ends. I just couldn't handle her whiny voice any longer!

"Interesting concept, witty dialogue, A+ narration"

This author seems to have tapped into interesting new concept for YA para/novella. The door is wide open for a long series, with colorful characters. There are a few holes in the ground work, but they may be filled in as the series progresses.

This narrator really brought out the color of the main characters. I loved the ease with which she used to make the banter between the characters witty and fun. Very realistic inflection, and tone.I really enjoyed her performance.

I'm glad I took a chance and spent a credit on this one.

    "Supernatural Teens Series Looks Promising"

ET meets Twilight in this teen novel. Daemon is an alien alright. Katy is the heroine and is really is a great counterpoint to Daemon. What you will really like the unfolding of the mystery of the story. They are many parallels to Twilight if you swap out vampires for aliens and roll everyone back to high school.

The narrator's voice at the beginning is very annoying. But after a while, it settles in okay. It's hard to describe why it is not great; but it Eyre's voice doesn't detract too much from the story; so I'm not going to ding it. This is a good teen novel for all ages.

I recommend it for a nice end of summer beach read.

AUDIO FANATIC. I check here first before I read anything! I read: YA dystopia, NA romance, some sci-fi, a bit of fantasy and the odd memoir

"Good story if you can get past the narrator"

I'm undecided on Jennifer Armentrout. I would prefer that the main character here (Katie) had less of a potty mouth - but that said, the story is pretty good. I liked the type of aliens here. Daemon (pronounced Demon? Didn't care for that) was a rather infuriating character. This wasn't a story that went where you thought it would - so that's good.

Justine Eyre was a very bad choice as a narrator. She has a bit of a whine, her voice is entirely too low, and she can't do a West Virginia accent at all. She was a terrible match for this story. And that's sad, because it definitely colored my impression of the book. This one is better read in print.

    "Amazing! Another great series"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. I've already read this book and still bought it again to listen to it. It's that good! Love the characters and the spark between two main characters is electrifying.

What other book might you compare Obsidian to and why?

Roswell. It's got the whole alien thing going but it's got a way better spin to it and its just so entertaining

What does Justine Eyre bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Attitude. And she's got a great voice. Makes it seem like u are there :)

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh and almost cry it was one of those books that does both

    Any additional comments?

Check out this authors other books! They are all good!

    "Needs a new narrator"

It's too bad that the narrator ruined this book for me. It's a pretty good story but I can't get past her whiny voice. I don't think the banter between them came across as realistic, her voice just sounded forced and fake.

    "Well paced listen!"

Great, fun narrator, and though the story was cliche in some parts and predictable, it was satisfying. Never felt bored and never wanted to stop listening. I'll be buying the next in the series!
