Publisher's summary

Never date your best friend. Always be original. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken.

Best friends Dave and Julia were determined never to be cliché high school kids - the ones who sit at the same lunch table every day, dissecting the drama from homeroom, and plotting their campaigns for prom king and queen. They even wrote their own Never List of everything they vowed they'd never, ever do in high school. Some of the rules have been easy to follow, like number five, never dye your hair a color of the rainbow, or number seven, never hook up with a teacher. But Dave has a secret: he's broken rule number eight, never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school. It's either that or break rule number ten, never date your best friend.

Dave has loved Julia for as long as he can remember. Julia is beautiful, wild, and impetuous. So when she suggests they do every Never on the list, Dave is happy to play along. He even dyes his hair an unfortunate shade of green. It starts as a joke, but then a funny thing happens: Dave and Julia discover that by skipping the clichés, they've actually been missing out on high school. And maybe even on love.

not what I expected

SPOILER ALERT!

I'm happy that this book stayed in character and is pretty realistic. a teenager taking for granted that her doctor mother wouldn't lie to her and never questioning. a teenager pining for the outside world. as an adult you realize that it's pretty fishy but for a YA novel it's perfect and I really enjoyed it.

The voice performance was spot on too

Never, Always, Sometimes

An interesting take on teenage angst. It was neat to see the point of view shift. A great author/narrator combo!

SO Fun!

Adi Alsaid does it again! This was really fun to listen to, and I didn't expect the shift in POV. The narrator does a really good job with all the different voices from teachers to jocks to the main characters. I especially liked how she could portray coolness as well as teenage angst. Awesome young adult book!!

This is not a HEA

When a romance novel is not an HEA, I think that it should be noted upfront. This story theme of childhood friends to lovers/unrequited love is a crowd fav among romance readers. So that may pull you in til the end, but the total bait and switch and the lack of resolution may leave you feeling as disturbed as it has left me. Now, I have to go and read another book just to clear my mind of this one.

Pretty Good Story for a Sweet Teen Crowd

This is less a young adult and more a sweet teen. (More like, "Boy Meets World" and less like "Paper Princess.")

DNF

DNF-ed at like 40%. I just couldn't be bothered to finish this book. It was boring and I have better things to do.

Immediate Emotional Relation.

I couldn't put it down, and wished there was a second college installment. We have all have had the should of, could of moments thinking everything firs in our perceptions. Funny thing is perception isn't reality.

Started Great. Did Not End Great.

This was okay for the first 80%, and then the last 20% was all blah and not convincing. It also made me question the point of the story, and now, I am not not sure there even was a point to this story.

It's a backwards twist on a bucket list, which was fun. The best part is the adorable relationship between these two best friends. The worst part is that the story lies about character emotions, throughout, in order to inform the final outcome, which is typical and uninspired, at best.

Excellent narration.

Slow start for me

What would have made Never Always Sometimes better?

Expressing the characters different points of view instead of the 3rd person.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm not sure, but I know what to listen for now.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

It was really the 3rd person point of view that really turned me off.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Never Always Sometimes?

There needs to be more drama at the first. It was somewhat predictable.
