Publisher's summary

The sea has taken everything.

Thirteen-year-old Mau is the only one left after a giant wave sweeps his island village away. But when much is taken, something is returned, and somewhere in the jungle, Daphne - a girl from the other side of the globe - is the sole survivor of a ship destroyed by the same wave.

Together, the two confront the aftermath of catastrophe. And slowly, other refugees arrive - children without parents, mothers without babies, husbands without wives - all of them hungry and all of them frightened. As Mau and Daphne struggle to keep the small band safe and fed, they defy ancestral spirits, challenge death himself, and uncover a long-hidden secret that literally turns the world upside down....

Internationally revered storyteller Terry Pratchett presents a breathtaking adventure of survival and discovery, and of the courage required to forge new beliefs.

Just perfect in every way

Pratchett is a genius of nuance, in addition to so many other things, but the nuances always seem to pay off in the most funny, insightful, touching, and human ways.

a favourite

One of my favourite Pratchett books, and that says a lot as I have read most of what he has written. The story is engaging and the characters feel so real, that he managed to make me really care about them, laugh with them and cry with them. The music is not as annoying as some reviews had me fear either, mainly at the start of chapters, and short ( tho honestly it adds nothing to the experience and may as well not be there.)

All in all a book I was so happy to listen to anf genuinely sad about fibishing

Completely a pleasure

Just loved this book, from beginning to end. Pratchett is a master storyteller, Briggs is simply brilliant as a narrator.

Nation

This is an excellent book. I've actually read it before I just got the audio book so I could listen at work. There is one brief moment in the file for MP3 player where for some reason part of later narrative is stuck in between some dialogue. There's another version of this audio book available that's a few seconds shorter. Maybe they fixed it.

A stand alone - not series

While this is classified as junior fiction it doesnt patronize or underestimate the reader, hence it can be enjoyable at any age. Nation is a very enjoyable story and the reading is, of course, impeccable. If you like the Diskworld series, you will not see so much of the series traditional humor although lots of the elements are easily recognizable. I feel this is a definite step up from his previous 'kids books' as I really did not like some of the characters (er.. Tiffany Aching) you could find in them. Its worth mentioning that this is not a series, its a stand-alone story. This book earns its 5 star reputation by giving you a hefty fight when you try to put it down!

Monty Python Meets Life of Pi

I have listened to some other Terry Pratchett books and I enjoyed them more than NATION. It seems like this book could not decide if it was an adventure story or typical Pratchett British wry humor, and as a result neither quality was fully realized.
To be sure, NATION is a very entertaining light read/listen. The ending wraps up nicely as well. I got the impression however that at times Pratchett rushed through certain parts as if in a hurry to finish. This created some confusion when trying to comprehend just what was occurring in the story.
All in all, an easy listen - low four to high three stars.

So much fun!

It was clever, tender, and a well-told tale. It’s listed as young adult but there’s nothing immature about it (says an MBA in her 50s)

I really enjoyed this book

What did you love best about Nation?

The characters were so interesting. The story made you think.

What about Stephen Briggs’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed the English accent. He read with such expression each character had his or her own personality.
