She tries to convince everyone she's fine - despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream that comes burbling up again and again.
Everyone thinks she's crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities....

I'm not sure what other reviewers were expecting when they downloaded this free, two hour short story. I began listening with no expectations whatsoever, without even having read the description (free is free, after all) and was enrapt, start to finish.
For such a short piece, a great deal of care goes into developing the main character and her relationships with those close to her. The author doesn't beat you over the head with it, but uses a delicate touch, which may be unsatisfying for certain types of people.
This is an absorbing, brilliantly executed portrait of a teenage girl in situation that would be, for anyone, strange to say the least. To complain that she seemed 'whiny' is to miss the point entirely -- a failure of imagination, at best. In her shoes, the rest of us would likely fare as well.
Much to my delight, this is merely a prologue of sorts to an ongoing series by the author, and I will be purchasing subsequent books on the authority of this work alone.
I have 3 kids that occupy all the TV's in the house...enough said...addicted to audiobook ....shhhh don't tell my husband ;-)
Win/ win, I loved this small prequel, its under 2 hours and free! it gives you a taste of a beginning of a new series without sacrificing a credit or money. I loved it, I was hooked the whole time and then bought the first 3 books in the series. Who doesn't like a story about a misunderstood teenage girl coming into her paranormal powers, its right up my ally.
Making the world better one review at a time.
During a panic attack she has at the mall, teenager Kaylee claws her throat raw in an effort to stop screaming. This extreme reaction lands her in the local psychiatric ward, where she is under careful observation by doctors and family alike. The reader is given the sense that there is more to Kaylee's panic attacks - and subsequent screaming - than there appears.
This piece is a prequel to Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series, but it is strong enough to stand on its own. An ideal reader will buy the rest of the series to find out just what is behind these panic attacks that haunt Kaylee. I may just buy the series myself. This piece of writing moved me. When the eerie music began to play at the end of the story, it gave me a creepy Twilight Zone feeling that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. To evoke that kind of reaction means the writer did her job well.
One small complaint....Kaylee kept talking about her "jaws." She mentioned her "jaws" at least twice if not three times. I didn't realize humans had more than one jaw. Perhaps I will google this and find that I am wrong, but as of this writing I believe I am right, so the "jaws" thing really bugged me.
Overall a worthwhile read, whether you plan to finish the series or not. Since this story is available for FREE, you have no excuse not to download it and enjoy the listen.
This book doesn't stand on it's own and would have been much better as a prologue in My Soul to Take. I rated it high because it is a great prologue which explains much of what happens in My Soul to Take and am very glad that I read it first.
Say something about yourself!
This is a short story about a girl who sees gray fog around people that she believes are going to die. When she feels the fog coming all she can do is scream. Unfortunately one of these screaming fits happened in the middle of sears and she is committed because of it....but she finds some answers in the psych ward.
I admit I only got this book because it was narrated by Amanda Ronconi, she is GOOD! But I'm intrigued enough to download book 1 and see where this goes. Is this chick just crazy, is she a grim reaper and doesn't know it, I want to know why she has to scream.
I am a parent that likes to know what my kids are reading!! Simply don't have the time to read and have a 2 hour commute everyday.
It is worth listening to.. Free is always great!
No. I gave her a try. There are way too many books out there for me.
The only reason I continued to listen was the narrator.
This was the first book I downloaded and listened to, and I was not disappointed. The writing is clear and concise and keeps you wanting to hear more. And there were some bits that had me giggling, too, even though this was supposed to be a mystery/suspense/thriller novel. My only gripe is that it ended too soon (for me) - but I guess that's just to make you want to read/listen to the other 2 books :)
Paranormal-urban fantasy book lover!
This is a must read if you are going to read the series. Read this book first so the rest of the series makes sense. It's a great backstory.
Kaylee and Em.
This is a great series and I am glad I bought the series. I am definitely going to read and re read these books.
It was good, I enjoyed the narrators voice, very smooth and easy to listen to.
I thought this was a great way to open up a series, a very interesting listen. I cannot remember when I got this but I have had this audio for awhile. I did enjoy the listen and look forward to reading the rest of this book.
It has a lot of twists and turns, a true page turner for a very short listen.
