Publisher's summary

Winner of the Newbery Honor, My Brother Sam is Dead brings the Revolutionary War to life in this contemporary classic for young adults.

The classic story of one family torn apart by the Revolutionary War

All his life, Tim Meeker has looked up to his brother. Sam is smart and brave, and is now a part of the American Revolution. Not everyone in town wants to be a part of the rebellion. Most are supporters of the British, including Tim and Sam’s father.

With the war soon raging, Tim knows he will have to make a choice between the Revolutionaries and the Redcoats, and between his brother and his father.

Just kept listening

I'm rating this for my 12 year old son who just kept listening to the book. He loves historical fiction and this book was no exception. I downloaded it on a whim for him and he sat for close to the entire time just listening to it! 4 hours of grabbing a 12 year old boys attention says a lot in my opinion.

Another excellent book this year

We loved this book as a family and loved the narrator. Voice that is easy to understand and interesting to follow along with the book. We had several great conversations about this book.

Not recommended

An interesting story, well read by the narrator, but way too much swearing! I found it offensive.

tough listen!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I teach this book, so I picked this up in order to keep it fresh in my mind while driving. However, I find the reader's voice to be so shrill that I can't listen for more than a few minutes!

What did you like best about this story?

Great storyline.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Yes!

Did My Brother Sam Is Dead inspire you to do anything?

I teach it to my 7th grade.

The Sound Quality!!

the sound quality is TERRIBLE. I bought this wanting to reread some of my childhood books (Johnny Tremaine was another and the previous) and I expected a kid's book type read but I didn't expect this POOR QUALITY.

The sound is completely muffled and hollow, almost like listening to someone talking through a pillow and a door.

A truly great story

The audio quality isn’t great, but I can overlook that since the reading is stellar and it’s one of my absolute favorite books of all time.

Appalling Quality

This is definitely not up to Audible’s usual standards. The story is completely overshadowed by the painful listening experience. We really tried to get through it but ended up bailing to finish it on paper because truly you could get better recording quality on a modern cellphone.

Terrible for audible!

If I had been aware that my 10-year-old children would be hearing this book, which has an audio quality resembling a silenced microphone, I would not have chosen to download it. Despite acknowledging the attempt to recreate a specific time period, the execution is poor, and it is agonizing to listen to when played out loud.
