Young British television actress Stephanie Leonidas reprises her film role as Helena Campbell, the daughter of circus performers who is cast into a dark realm that is part Alice in Wonderland part Wizard of Oz, and part Salvador Dali. In a moment of rebellion, Helena wishes her mother dead. Later that evening, her mother falls into a coma, and Helena soon falls into a bizarre fantasy world in which a Dark Queen tries to wipe out Helena's past and make her a Dark Princess. Leonidas reads with a rich, sweet voice but lacks the energy and emotional intensity of her on-screen performance. Still, her enticing accent coupled with Gaiman's off-kilter storytelling makes this a delightful, if at times spooky, family audiobook.
MirrorMask is a breathtaking film written by best-selling author Neil Gaiman and brought to life through the vision of acclaimed artist and director Dave McKean. This original audio novella is Helena's tale in her own voice, a stunning and magical journey.

"A delightful, if at times spooky, family audiobook." (Booklist)
I love Neil and I love audiobooks. However, this is the only instance when I've heard one of his stories come off flat, and it's not the narrator's fault. There's just not much there. But, of course, if you've seen the movie, it's understandable that such beautifully strange visuals don't translate well into words. It seemed like there wasn't even an attempt to describe the "dream" sequence, and it feels hollow. Not typical Gaiman Greatness. Neil is a master writer with an astounding imagination. I recommend all of his other work, especially the ones he narrates himself.
I love Neil Gaiman's writing, but I just can't recommend this one. It started out well, but once the 'dream' section started you couldn't really relate to any of the characters or events anymore. It just seemed too surreal and disconnected. If you have to have everything he's ever written, then by all means add this one to your collection. Otherwise, I recommend giving this one a pass.
MirrorMask was an extrordanary book. Even if it was a little short, it had me listening the whole time with eger anticipation. When the book ended, which I didn't want it to, I was very satisfied.
I am at that half a century mark in years. I enjoy audiobooks, cats, rats and most days my family, not necessarily in that order!lol
This is a great book. The movie is basically the same, word for word. The story is good.
I liked it.

this is a good book but if you like the story then you should see the movie its just as good as the book. it is the book as the book is not that long
Picky about books and narration. Favorite genre by far is fantasy.
This has to be the shortest story I've read/listened to that didn't feel incomplete. Somehow in one hour, Gaiman made me care about the characters. Its impressive.
Neil Gaiman is so good I decided to follow him on Twitter, and found myself irritated that he was tweeting instead of writing another book for me to read. He seems to often meet the standard definition of a fantasy story: his characters leave the 'real' world for a different one, and then return after having resolving a personal conflict. This one involves parents and children and otherworld parents and children. I don't want to spoil the story--just enjoy!
I seriously loved this book. It was fun and quirky in a totally Neil Gaiman style. I wish it were longer though, since I enjoyed it so much. I would recommend this as a fast fun listen.
