Publisher's summary

James Patterson's explosive debut in the young adult market is guaranteed to create legions of new fans for this beloved, multimillion-selling author.

Fang, Iggy, Nudge, the Gasman, Angel, and Maximum: Six kids who are pretty normal in most ways, except that they're 98% human, 2% bird. They grew up in cages, living like rats, but now they're free. Riding the wind, their wings are an amazing gift...and yet, their world can morph into a nightmare in a single instant. For when the bloodthirsty Erasers, half men, half-wolves genetically engineered by sick and sinister scientists, kidnap little Angel, the Flock embarks on a rescue mission that will change them forever.

From Death Valley, California, to the bowels of the New York City subway system, 14-year-old Max leads her five feisty "family" members on a journey full of nonstop action, adventure, and soul-seeking, not to mention a little bit of saving the world on the side!

Good story

I enjoyed this book. It is obvious to me that Patterson has set us up for a sequel. My only complaint is that I wish it had been unabridged. I really don't like abridged stories - I always wonder what I missed.

Maximum Ride isn't like When The Wind Blows

Being a Patterson fan, I read and loved When The Wind Blows and The Lake House. When The Wind Blows and The Lake House are the story of the flying girl Max and her siblings. Much better than Maximum Ride.

I’m too old for this series

The story and presentation are good enough for me to like this book. I returned it because I felt it was intended for a tween audience. It made me feel like I was an old man overhearing a conversation I was too old to hear.

A New Direction from a good author

This story is a excellent departure from the normal James Patterson work. Still it has all his trademarks with the tension, intrigue and humor that are his trademarks. You will like the story line and characters and wonder what is next only to be left at the end with a desire to know more about Maximum Ride and her friends... The reader does a great and convincing job as a young and strong woman of today.

bait and switch

I enjoyed When The Wind Blows and The Lake House and was eager to see the story of Max,her babies, and her flock unfurl further.I was terribly disappointed when most of the characters and the story line changed radically. This story was dull and predictable in setting up sequels but I don't think anyone will care.I know I don't.

Any additional comments?

My youngest son kept saying play the movie haha we thought that was great! If you have ever been on a road trip with your children ....you know how hard it is for them to sit still not fight or ask that wonderful question are we there yet? Yet as we drove over 1500 miles in 2 days it flew by as we all went on the maximum ride adventure. I guess I have to admit I would haveenjoyed this bymyself this is a great story.

A good book

I really enjoyed this book. It was very different but good. I would like to see a book 2, to find out what happen to the flock. Would listen to it again. I also enjoyed the reader. She seem to make the book come alive.
