Publisher's summary

In the Society, Officials decide. Who you love. Where you work. When you die.

Cassia has always trusted the Society’s choices. And when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, she is certain he’s the one - until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now she is faced with impossible choices: Between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s ever known and a path no has dared to follow...between perfection and the truth.

Look for the sequel, Crossed, and the epic series finale, Reached!

Featured Article: Excellent Dystopian Listens Like The Hunger Games

The popularity of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games trilogy and its film adaptations has paved the way for so many great dystopian books and series in YA, imagining harrowing worlds where teens must fight for survival and define what life means to them. The enduring popularity of the series has proven that dystopian stories and the sometimes-dark futures they imagine are endlessly fascinating to our imaginations.

Amazing book

It was a great book overall. It had no sketchy or inappropriate parts and had a great ending. I would be sure to have enough credits to buy the sequels so it can actually end. Loved it!

One of My daughters favorite series

Its a good teen series. I read it for My daughter. Sharing similar books gives a parent a platform to speak on something in the child's life.

Im not the intended audience. Although I found the series entertaining, it couldn't bridge the age gap.

Satisfying Dystopian YA Fiction

Another in the plethora of dystopian YA fiction that is to be found, Matched is actually quite good and different from The Hunger Games and Divergent. It's less death-defying, which is the huge difference. There's no violence.

But there is a controlling Society who manages every single part of a person's life, down to the person whom they are to marry. And this is where this particular dystopian story differs.

This story is told well. Some of the prose is quite lovely. The characters are full people. And as a first in a trilogy, it's a good start. I'm intrigued enough to want to read the second book, Crossed.

The narrator is very good, with the perfect youthful voice for the first person narration.

Pretty good - gets better

I went in knowing that the only similarity between "Matched" and "The Hunger Games" was a dystopian society, so I wasn't expecting THG part 4. The first half of the book was quite slow for me. I knew where the story was going, to a point, but it wouldn't get there. Once it got there, it started picking up for me on several different levels and I was fully engaged. I also enjoyed the differing personalities between the two main male characters and Cassia's slow realization of the world around her. By the end, I was/am definitely ready for the next novel. Plus, the book uses my favorite poem as a central theme. Last note: the narrator's voice sounded extremely young - 10 or 11 - so it took some getting used to.

Intriguing premise, but definitely a teen book

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. My friends are a bit older and this type of genre would most likely not be in their "have to read" lists.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting aspect was that knowing what Cashia actually does as a "sorter." You don't find out its relevance until closer to the end of the book. The least interesting was her interactions with Kai. For some reason, he just bored me.

Have you listened to any of Kate Simses’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. I can't compare.

Do you think Matched needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I believe there is a follow-up book, as you are left wondering what happened to her love interest Kai. I can't say more in fear of spoiling the plot.

Any additional comments?

These books all based on utopian societies really hammer on the lemming effect. The fear of death and negative consequences of our actions overrides all other sensibilities. It's pretty amazing what you will endure in the name of self-preservation.
