Editorial reviews

Vivid writing, humane characters, and sensitive narration make this award-winning young adult novel a gripping listen. The story is unforgettably dark: A 10-year-old girl murders her best friend, and after serving five and a half years in prison, she struggles to keep the secret from those in her new life. Only her probation officer and a reporter know the truth. Haunting yet compassionate, the novel grapples with big themes: secrecy, trust, the capacity of children for violence, and the possibility of forgiveness. An unforgettable listen for older kids and adults looking for a dark but thought-provoking tale.

Publisher's summary

Three children walked away from the cottages on the edge of the town towards Berwick Waters. Later that day only two of them came back...

Alice Tully knows exactly what happened that spring day six years ago, though it's still hard for her to believe it's real. The images, the sounds, and the aftermath are imprinted on her memory. She'll never be able to forget, even though she's trying to lead a normal life. She's making a go of things, putting her past behind her at last. But Alice's past is dangerous, and violent, and sad. And it's about to rip her new life apart.

A gripping and emotionally searing novel from an accomplished author. Anne Cassidy has tackled a terrifying subject with subtlety and imagination: Looking for JJ will not let you go.

K

Not much in the way of a compelling or interesting story. Young girl has crappy childhood; murders friend; gets released under a new identity; new identity discovered; girl changes identities in response. Other than losing her virginity in what may be an instance of statutory rape, the book slogs along at a “meh” pace.

The narrator was good, but the production sucked. Speaking of sucking, you can hear every one of the narrator’s swallows and dry-mouth smacks.
