Publisher's summary

in Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past...and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves...and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love - the light and the dark, the warm and the cold - in a way you will never forget.

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

"Just a fictional story"

I thought is was a really good love story....I believe when reading a book you have to have an open mind about it and not compare it to any other book. I say just a fictional story cause some people complain and say that is not how a teenager acts or thinks, but once again its fictional and we all dont think the same. although im no longer a teenager, but a mother of 3 kids reading takes me away from the everyday life of stress and that is what this book has done and i love it.

Grew on me

I read Shiver but decided to go with the audiobook for Linger. One of the reasons I loved Shiver was the dual points of view we get from both protagonists, Sam and Grace. This method of storytelling was new to me and I felt that I knew both characters better by the end of the book because of it. In Linger, Maggie Stiefvater increases the number of unique points of view to four. At first, I felt cheated with having to "share" Sam and Grace time with two other characters. I am glad I stuck with it because Cole and Isabel are excellent foils for Sam and Grace. Maggie Stiefvater remains true to each character's unique personality throughout Linger. The narrators were all outstanding as well.

Good read!

You must read Shiver first or you will be slightly lost. I love books with multiple narrators. Sam's was way better than the older guy voice in Shiver. The end was unexpected but I really enjoyed it.

Respectable Second Entry

The first book was interesting, although the characters were a little predictable. This second in the series is also acceptable. It's not fabulous, but a fairly satisfying listen. The introduction of two other narrators helps keep the story fresh.

Even better than Shiver

If you enjoyed Shiver at all (which I did), you should definitely give this book a try. The voices are amazingly well done (especially compared to the Shiver production). I appreciated the "new" characters, Cole & Isabel, because it really relieved what would otherwise be a repetitive and sappy story. Having the very different perspectives allowed the Sam & Grace bits to stay sweet and not become drippy.

Some have argued that the story rambled in places or didn't accomplish much, but I didn't feel that at all. Just being with these great characters was more than enough to keep me entertained. Also, those who felt that this is just another Twilight ripoff should know that Shiver & Linger are way better than Meyer's saga.

P.S. The original music by Stiefvater played at the end is excellent. I actually rewound the track to listen to it again! :)

Disappointed follow up

Loved Shiver but I was kind of bored with this one. The story didn't really go anywhere, and it was really slow trying to get there. I liked the idea that Grace and Sam could switch places, but so much of the book was spent with nothing really happening. The whole relationship between Graces' parents and Sam seemed ridiculous and unbelievable this time.

kinda sappy. but wolves

the second part of this series got slightly too sappy for me. the new voice qxotr for the main male lead was changed and this guy sounds closer to 13 than to the 19 yr old hes supposed to be so that was rough. but when one of the readers pronounced the word wolf as woof. I almost lost it. anyway. I'm moving in the the next and final book to see what happens with these woofs

Something old, Something new...

This book was up and down for me. I found the beginning slow, particularly because Shiver could have ended right where it did. I found myself thinking that this was angst just for the sake of angst and the characters have already been through this. The rest of the book picked up and held a great pace, but again, at the end, I thought they ended up right where Shiver started pretty much. Granted, it's a twist, but it's sort of the same story.
The reason I gave it three stars is because after the beginning it did hold my interest and I'm curious to see what happens in "Forever", but the story had a lot of repetitiveness to "Shiver".

Narration: I noticed right away that "Cole's" voice was narrated by the same person who narrates "Adam" in "Where she went"...and they both play rock stars. Funny.

Sam and Grace were definitely the best voices, followed by Cole and then Isabelle. It was very clear when Sam and Grace were narrating each other's parts. But, when Cole or Isabelle tried to narrate someone else's part, it was hard to distinguish voices. In particular, though, I found Grace's narration of Isabelle to be the most different from Isabelle's actual voice. Grace's interpretation sounded like a valley girl (which is what I pictured) and Isabelle's actual voice sounded like someone from Munchkinland in the Wizard of Oz.

Multiple Narrators

What did you like best about Linger? What did you like least?

I like the prose and the romantic, almost gothic winter world.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I didn't feel urgency for any of the character's goals.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jenna Lamia?

Yes.

Was Linger worth the listening time?

Not really.

Any additional comments?

One of the narrators pronounced "wolf" as "woof," and it was extremely distracting.
