Publisher's Summary

The eagerly awaited second book of the critically acclaimed trilogy!

Orphan Rossamünd Bookchild has been sworn into the Emperor's service - his duty is to light the lamps along the Emperor's highways and protect travelers from the ferocious bogles that live in the wild. But he's found it no easier to fit in with the lamplighters than he did with the foundlings - always too small and too meek - and his loneliness continues no matter how hard he tries to succeed.

But when a haughty young girl, a member of a suspiciously regarded society of all-women teratologists - monster hunters - is forced upon the lamplighters for training, Rossamünd is no longer the most despised soul around. As Rossamünd begins to make new friends in the dangerous world of the Half-Continent, he also seems to make more enemies, finding himself pushed toward a destiny that he could never have imagined.

    Story
"There aren't enough stars for this trilogy"

DM Cornish has created a world so immersive and detailed that all you want is more. He has created his own slang and introduces it throughout each of the three books so expertly. To top of the BRILLIANCE of his story, Humphrey Bower truly gives us one of the most stellar performances that I have ever heard. You will fall in love with Rossamund and all of the other characters that DM Cornish and Humphrey Bower make come alive.

"A Story worth the your time"

Durning my read, I found it to kinda start off slow. The story has a lot more character development and less action. I found the book to be a good story and had a thrilling end! It leaves you ready for the next book. The narrator did very well with the individuals voices. My favorite was Sir. Sebastipole. I think his Character matched perfectly with the voice, at least the looks i gave him in my head.

"I don't normally enjoy fantasy, but..."

this was an awesome experience. I bought this book because it was narrated by Humphrey Bowers (it says a lot about the narrator when you buy a book simply because he narrates it). I was not disappointed, but was surprised by the strength of the story.

    "Depressing"

This volume in the series is kind of depressing and has so little closure that you might want to skip it and figure out the basics from the next book. But if you have the time, this book is a fair addition to the series.

    "Good Story. Painful main character"

I read the first book of the series, and the story is rich enough that it brings you into the world and keeps you interested. However, I was hoping that the main character would grow a bit and be less pathetic, I was disappointed. It becomes very tiresome... it makes him less interesting, more predictable, and eventually drags down the story.
