Publisher's summary

A popular guy and a shy girl with a secret become unlikely accomplices in midnight pranking and are soon in over their heads - with the law and with each other - in this sparkling standalone from New York Times best-selling author Anna Banks.

It's been several years since Carly Vega's parents were deported. Carly lives with her older brother, studies hard, and works the graveyard shift at a convenience store to earn enough to bring her parents back from Mexico.

Arden Moss used to be the star quarterback at school. He used to date popular blondes and have fun pranking with his older sister, Amber. But now all that has changed, and Arden needs a new accomplice - especially one that his father, the town sheriff, will disapprove of.

All Carly wants is to stay under the radar and do what her family expects. All Arden wants is not to do what his family expects. When their paths cross, they each realize they've allowed their lives to be driven by the wishes of others. Just like real life, Carly and Arden's journey toward their true hearts - and one another - is funny, romantic, and sometimes harsh.

If you haven't read this book...

then you are wasting your life!
This book was beautifully written. The narrators were perfect for the characters they portrayed. This was the first Anna Banks book I have read/listened to, but it certainly won't be the last!

This book has some issues...

The fact that I completely disagree with the political views expressed in this book aside, I do have other issues that I feel need to be expressed. First is the way the male character I'd written/read. I can't tell if it's in 3rd person or not. I found it very difficult to follow the story or understand who was actually talking. Second, I don't think the two main characters have any chemistry. I felt the friendship between the main girl and the uncle more. In fact, I kind of wish there was more of the Uncle in the book. Thirdly, I don't feel like the book was resolved. the ending wasn't satisfying like a book should be. Unfortunately, this not a book I will listen to again. And it is not a book I would recommend. Again, my personal political opinions aside.

It started off with promise but...

None of it - the subpar writing, the cardboard/goody goody characters, the flat romance, the wildly outlandish plot - made listening to this entire book worth it. The beginning I'd have given a 4 to, until the novel grew progressively more cheeseball and delved into the delusionally unrealistic. That's all I'll say. Don't bother with this book because the promising potential it appears to wear in the beginning flakes off throughout the narrative in scales of disappointment, expectations unmet, and wasted time.

Constantly skips ahead

I kept thinking that something was wrong with the app because randomly the story would skip ahead. Turns out that the app is fine. It’s just that the author skips forward and misses the details. You figure out what happened, but it’s definitely annoying.

Very enjoyable story

I really enjoyed this story. It was a different kind of coming of age story.

I really think this story is a must read right now considering our current border crisis. This might be a fictional story but it is really for millions of immigrants that are currently crossing our border in search of a better and safer life. Maybe this read will humanize these people and families and give Americans some understanding of what it is like to be in their shoes.

Just imagine going to a different country with your children. Then have to try to support your children. It must be almost impossible to get a job when you don’t even speak or understand the language. So they are forced to do menial jobs that don’t pay much just to scrape by. With the grocery and housing prices the way they are, these people have an uphill battle ahead of them. It is hard to start over. But to start over in a new country when you don’t speak English, it is almost impossible. Now they have to work and take English as a second language classes. Then go on to other classes so they can learn a trade for better pay, it is a lot!.

I went to school with hispanic kids that had to also work a job just to hand over their pay to their parents. In most cases the kids bring in more money because they are the ones who were bilingual. They also had to double as interpreters for their parents at appointments and anywhere else there was a language barrier. They did their homework for school then spent hours teaching their parents English before they could go to bed for the night for less sleep than they needed just to get up and do it all again the next day. Most of these kids were forced to quit school in the end because work and money came first. Without work there is no pay. Without pay their is no roof over their heads or food to eat. This is the reality they found after leaving everything they knew behind to cross the border thinking they were coming to the land of opportunity. The only good thing about their decision is that their families are in a safer place, if they don’t lose their children to DCFS in the end. I pray for all of those families and hope that their sacrifices are worth it.

I haven't written a review in a long time

this story was fantastic, the characters are sarcastic in a witty funny kind of way that is enjoyable. It keeps things fun without drawing attention away from the seriousness of the character backstories, which are very believable and relatable to many people, so it really draws you in and brings the story to life. Also its informative for some people who haven't ever heard a lengthy tale of a person's misfortunes and struggles under circumstances like trying to bring a family into the United States. I feel like it gave a lot of personal and relatable insight that any human being can have empathy for the character. The villain was so believable that you might wonder if such things are happening in real life, in fact it's hard not to believe that such things are happening in real life. Also the author does an excellent job with pacing and keeping the story moving in an exciting action filled way with comedy break up the painful realities that some of us live with in real life. You really journey with the characters and watch them grow, bravo 👏

A little different and cute story

I like the whole Latina vibe. It’s different than every other story and added layers. The female narrator was fantastic. Cute story and easy listen.

Trash.

Super weird choice for a VERY white author to write about Hispanic characters and deportation. Super tone deaf and really just not the move.
This book could have had the exact same plot just just a poor girl instead of the whole deprivation/illegal immigrant plot line. Just really truly insensitive.

Love it more with every reading.

Everything from the narration to the story is perfectly done. it has just the right amount of human issues to romance.

Every time I read this book I find I enjoy it more and more. The moments of heartbreak and of joy are beautifully shown throughout the book.

If you're looking for a good high school romance with a good subplot then this is the book for you.
