Publisher's summary

Kaeleigh and Raeanne are 16-year-old identical twins, the daughters of a district court judge father and politician mother running for U.S. Congress. Everything on the surface seems fine, but underneath run very deep and damaging secrets.

When the girls were nine, Daddy turned to his beloved Kaeleigh in ways a father never should. Raeanne needs to numb the pain of not being Daddy's favorite; Kaeleigh wants to do everything she can to feel something normal, even if it means cutting herself and vomiting after every binge.

How Kaeleigh and Raeanne figure out just what it means to be whole again when their entire world has been torn to shreds is the guts and heart of this powerful, disturbing, and utterly remarkable book.

Critic reviews

"Hopkins' gift with free verse reaches new heights in this portrait of splintered identical twins.... Kaeleigh and Raeanne maintain distinct voices throughout as they wrestle with psychic damage and an astonishing, devastating realization. Sharp and stunning, with a brilliant final page." ( Kirkus Reviews )
"Hopkins' verse is not only lean and sinuous, it also demonstrates a mastery of technique." ( Publishers Weekly)

Not for the faint of heart

Listening to the audiobook, I’d never know IDENTICAL was written in free verse. This is my first listen of a book written in verse, mostly because verse isn’t my favorite format for novels so I don’t read many. My Audibles are usually stories I’ve loved in written format so I want a different experience with the characters. My favorite narrators give voice to characters I want to revisit.

I read IDENTICAL years ago, but the plot twist was the only part I remembered. Listening and knowing that twist helped me notice all the clever clues the brilliant Ellen Hopkins drops along the way.

IDENTICAL is dark. Very dark. Dripping with pain and dysfunction, the twins deal with an often absent mother, abusive father, eating disorders, drugs and dysfunctional relationships including with each other.

Readers who like verse and dark stories will best enjoy IDENTICAL.

Dark, Dark, Dark

Ellen Hopkins is a talented writer, but this is a slow, dark story. It is narrated very well by Laura Flanagan who portrays both sisters with distinctly different personalities. It is very contemporary and the sisters are dealing with issues faced by today’s high schoolers as well as facing challenges which have been around since time began. The story is gripping, but oh so dark.

Wanted to love it, but it was just obvious for me

I heard good things, wanted a great twist to end a great story! But unfortunately you knew pretty much from the start what was going on and it just wasn't as original as I had hoped.

I couldn't take another minute

It is hard for me to believe anyone with more than a 10th grade education would find this book tolerable. After forty-five minutes I had to quit.

Not what I expected but still good.

The overall story was good but the subject matter was also a little hard at time. It does have possible triggers for a variety of situations, but most of the author's stories seem to be that way. The ending gave me hope but this is very hard when you think about the fact there are children who do have to deal with this. There was a definite twist that I didn't see coming, and I'm usually decent at at least getting in the ballpark of what twist in stories are.

I was so so on the narrator. She did a good job at using different tones and inflections for the twins, but there was something about the way she spoke that I didn't particularly care for but it was not enough to make me stop listening.

Not sure if this is a spoiler but I wanted to give a trigger warning to anyone who has dealt with sexual abuse, substance abuse, self harm or bulimia/eating disorders. If you listen to this story be prepared and maybe have someone you can talk with if the subjects in this story cause you any distress.

Crank/Glass a better choice by Ellen Hopkins

I was disappointed in this book; there was some graphic contect, including an insestuest relationship between father and daughter. The ending made up for the content, because it was good and unexpected, however, I still prefer Crank and Glass as the best books done by Ellen Hopkins.

I’m obsessed with the series, voice sucks.

I’ve read the entire crank series & extra books by Ellen Hopkins multiple times. This time I thought I’d listen to the audio book. The voice actor is terrible. The way she did the twins voices? Ugh. It’s almost unbearable. Raeanne sounds like she’s crashing from dope. It’s just too much. We get it, she does drugs & she’s not a giddy person. The voice actor makes her sound like a hippie that’s done too many mushrooms. The voice sounds manly. I don’t like it. Kaylees voice parts sound like an anime character. Insecure but laughing in every sentence. Makes me imagine Kristen Stuart tucking her hair behind her ear. Both voices are cringe. It was very disappointing. Ellen Hopkins rocks though, love love love her books.
