That's when the first ace arrives in the mail.
That's when Ed becomes the messenger.
Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping and hurting (when necessary), until only one question remains: Who's behind Ed's mission?

"Zusak succeeds brilliantly." (Booklist)
"Zusak's characters, styling, and conversations are believably unpretentious, well conceived, and appropriately raw. Together, these key elements fuse into an enigmatically dark, almost film-noir atmosphere." (School Library Journal)
This is a great book for older teens as it has an important message about getting involved and caring about others and the positive effect it can have own your life. Beware about reading to younger kids as it has some mild bad language and a heavy scene with rape. My son loved this book and didn't want it to end. It has a similar message as "The ultimate Gift" but more serious and appealing to older teens.
I listened to the first chapter of this book and didn't go any further. There is foul language that is unnecessary, the story and character development is silly, and I didn't care for the narrator. Not my cup of tea.
Loved the narrator, the writing & the story! Everyone I know who's read it complains about the ending. But I'm okay with it. Hope Zusak keeps writing more like this!
I'm a professional painter and love ennobling, enlightening literature
a better story. this is exceedingly simple and I can't say I found the characters believable
The book rings false
One of my most favorite books is the Book thief by the same author. Don't miss it.
yes, I liked the characters and the reader gave it life.
When he realizes his role in the cards.
His reading makes the book for me. You get more nuances of character. I love the accent and language. His cadence is perfect.
What would you do if you could change the lives of others?
Play the cards your dealt.
Wife, Mother, 1965,
I read Markus Zusak's The Book Thief and was touched by the profound richness of the story! He brilliantly interweaves characters in a historical time, encapsulating it all with a stick to your soul love for humanity, life and its challenges. Have I said brilliant?!
Alas, I Am The Messenger, though smart writing, pales . . . The story however entertaining was not deep, profound or memorable. I found the ending a predictable writers copout.
The language of curse word after curse word cheapened the story. Simply I don't want such garbage in my mind. Sure it may paint the picture of poor, uneducated, simple people but I feel it lacks ingenuity from the writer.
There are no long detailed graphic pornographic sex scenes, thankfully! However, the main character has an obsession with sex. He is not getting enough sex, being bad at it, not getting it with the one he loves, and other details and descriptions than I care to read about... Not for your teens and well, those who are virtuous.
I would recommend this book to a 26 year old, never married male who is home from work because of a herpes flare up.
I thought the book was very good, but hard to listen to because of the narrator's accent. I think that this is one book I would have preferred to read and not listen to.
