Grade A Stupid: Book 1 of the Darcy Walker Series | [A. J. Lape]

Grade A Stupid: Book 1 of the Darcy Walker Series

Fifteen years ago, Darcy Walker's parents thought it was a good idea to give her a unique name: Darcy, meaning "dark walker". Whether that was a stroke of genius or stroke of stupid, they definitely nailed the irony. She lacks direction, her grades stink despite a high IQ, she's boringly average - although flirting admirers claim otherwise - and God help her, she's infatuated with a bad-boy. A bad-boy that her hottie best friend, Dylan, wishes would get acquainted with his fist.

Darcyville...where stupidity is celebrated...with a deadly dose of sin.

And, oh yeah, there's that tattoo that was a royally stupid idea.

With her life spiraling out of control, everything changes when she skips class and finds a dead body...in fact, it gets worse. It jump-starts Darcy's inner-verb, and her brain hardwired for action gets caught up in a situation she can't let go.

Set in the fictional Cincinnati town of Valley, Ohio, Darcy's story falls into a world of threats, violence, and gangland exploits chasing down every clue to finger the murderer. When a fellow misfit is fingered for the crime, Darcy goes from zero to 60 trying to clear his name - constructing aliases, breaking the law, everything that makes perfect sense to her but reeks of Grade A Stupid to everyone else.

Trouble is...will she live to see 16?

    "Grade A+ Audiobook!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to anyone, both teen and adult. Grade A Stupid is wrought with laugh-out-loud humor, heart pounding action, and a lot of heart. I love Darcy Walker as a character and the actress brought Darcy, as well as the other beloved characters in this book, to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Grade A Stupid?

There were many memorable scenes, but one that stands out is in the police evidence room with her encounter with Jinx's Dad. Dylan's Party was also memorable. (I don't want to give spoilers!) I also loved her awkward and sweet scenes with Dylan.

What does Patricia Fructuoso bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Patricia is an excellent voice actress and even though she did several male voices, it still worked. Each character had his or her own voice and she switched voices fluently. I always knew exactly who was talking. Her voice for both Darcy and Ivory were perfection!

    Any additional comments?

I was very impressed with Patricia and how she brought Grade A Stupid to life. The author of the Book, AJ Lape, is an excellent author and she created a dynamic and memorable character in Darcy Walker and in the other beloved characters in the book. I listened to the audiobook whenever I was traveling. Many times my listening was broken up and I would listen a couple hours here, half an hour there... Fifteen minutes another time. Each time I was completely sucked into the story immediately. I didn't have to take time to get back into the story mindset. I loved that.
I can't wait until all of the Darcy Walker series is on audiobook, hopefully using Patricia as the lead for Darcy again!

    "Darcy Walker comes to Life!!!"
Where does Grade A Stupid rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Patricia Fructuoso really brought Darcy to life for me. The other characters were well portrayed, but I think she nailed Darcy, spot on.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Darcy Walker is amazing. Everyone needs a friend like her. She doesn't judge, but she isn't naive. She may be accident prone and tend to get into more trouble than good. But, she's a teenage private eye. You must cause some trouble to get the real answers in her world.

What about Patricia Fructuoso’s performance did you like?

I loved Patricia Fructuoso. I really could feel the characters come to life through her. She was so cute.

    Any additional comments?

I am a huge fan the Darcy Walker series. I read this book before I listened to audio and I'm glad I did both. The narrator must have felt a connection with the main characters because I was enthralled with her story throughout the entire book. Well written story and well narrated audio.

Where does Grade A Stupid rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Grade A Stupid is one of the best audiobooks that I have listened to. The story is great, but the narration of Patricia Fructuoso really brings the story to life. Definitely one I will listen to again. I cannot wait to hear the second book in the Darcy Walker series.

"Funny story with a Spunky Main Character"

Grade A Stupid reads more like a Cozy Mystery than your typical broody YA novel. The Main Character was charming and funny, but always seemed to find trouble. The characters were fun and the mystery was filled with twists and turns.

The only thing that put me off was the way main characters thoughts jumped around. It was brilliant on the author's part, seeing as Darcy has ADD, but at times I found it distracting. It wasn't enough to take away from the story, but just enough to pull me out of the narration from time to time.

Patricia Fructuoso did a fantastic job with narration. She captured Darcy's personality perfectly.

    "Perfect Voice For Darcy"
What did you love best about Grade A Stupid?

This story will have you laughing from the beginning to the end. Darcy sure knows how to get herself into trouble. She is a 15 year old girl who has a mind that thinks different that other fifteen year olds. The words that come out of her mouth will make you laugh so hard that if you are around anyone they will want to know what is so funny. This story has everything from blossoming romance to murder mystery. What else do you need in a story? There are so many characters in this story that you will not figure out the mystery until the very end. Just when you think, all the mysteries are solved, we have more at the end so now onto the next book in this series to find out what else Darcy will get into. This author is amazing with how she keeps up with all these characters in this story. Loved this story and this is the second time I have read it. Just as good as the first time.

What other book might you compare Grade A Stupid to and why?

No Brainer and 100 Proof Stud. They are part of this series.

What does Patricia Fructuoso bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brought out many different tones of the characters and since Darcy is a teenager and gets into so much trouble, it is brought to life. We get to hear and it all sounds like a movie coming to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book is hilarious and will having you laugh out and no matter who is around they will hear you. Loved every bit of it.

    Any additional comments?

Love to listen to No Brainer and 100 Proof Stud in The Darcy Walker series.

    "Best Audible Book Ever!!"
What made the experience of listening to Grade A Stupid the most enjoyable?

Besides the great story of Grade A Stupid the narrator did a amazing job not only voicing Darcy but also the supporting characters as well. Not one character in the book had the same voice they all were unique and true to the character AJ Lape wrote.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Dylan. He is not only a alpha male but he is also in touch with his sweet side and is not afraid to show his true feelings in regards to Darcy.

What about Patricia Fructuoso’s performance did you like?

I loved how she told the story in general but also that she took the time to voice each character differently so that when listening you were not mixing anyone up because you could tell who they were based on their voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I cried toward the ending, Patricia did a amazing job bringing to life the scenes towards the end so much to the point where you felt as you were in the story itself.

    Any additional comments?

AJ Lape is a amazing author and her Darcy Walker series is lightyears ahead of what is out in the market now in regards to teen series. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Darcy. Even more now that Patricia has voiced theses characters so beautifully in my mind.

    "Pretty Good Beginning"

A great first young adult novel by a talented writer who had written an extremely amusing and entertaining work. The protagonist is fifteen year old Darcy Walker, an underachiever with a measured IQ of 160 and a bad case of ADD. Darcy is sweet, likable and at times is quite courageous; at other times she is so passive that she can't manage to get a word out of her mouth.
I realize that behavioral consistency from a fifteen year old girl with ADD is a ridiculous concept but it does strain credulity for her to take on a street gang without taking a backward step, but be afraid to confront "mean girl" Ivy.
Too many of the book's characters are one dimensional and not particularly likable. The relationship between Darcy and Dreamboat Dylan is dysfunctional to the point that drug therapy and relationship counseling should be commenced immediately. The same is true for the aforementioned Ivy and her boyfriend Jagger Kane; and on again, off again couple noted for assaulting each other physically publicly.
Despite these problems my daughter and I both recommend this selection and this author. We look forward to the next installment in the life of Darcy Walker, though with more three dimensional, as well as more likable characters
