Publisher's summary

The riveting conclusion to Scott Westerfeld’s New York Times best-selling trilogy that’s “sure to become a classic” (School Library Journal).

Alek and Deryn are on the last leg of their round-the-world quest to end World War I, reclaim Alek’s throne as Prince of Austria, and finally fall in love. The first two objectives are complicated by the fact that their ship, the Leviathan, continues to detour farther away from the heart of the war (and crown). And the love thing would be a lot easier if Alek knew Deryn was a girl. (She has to pose as a boy in order to serve in the British Airforce.) And if they weren’t technically enemies.

The tension thickens as the Leviathan steams toward New York City with a homicidal lunatic onboard: secrets suddenly unravel, characters reappear, and nothing is at it seems in this thunderous conclusion to Scott Westerfeld’s brilliant trilogy.

Another World But Not Just Another Girl

If you could sum up Goliath in three words, what would they be?

Adventure. Secrets. Survival.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked Westerfeld's portrayal of a different world with similarities to our world now, in addition to his understanding of a female's wish to be respected without concern for her gender.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! Every page either presented a new problem, character, adventure or hint at something amazing while continuing to remind me that the story's characters had choices to make that could impact the story at any moment.

Any additional comments?

I loved Westerfeld's ability to describe technology that is impossible to paint in a picture. This is clearly an example of how the books we read sometimes outdo films we watch or paintings we see. It empowers our imagination and provides us with a world that is only limited by Westerfeld's mastery of the language.

So Good

Ugh just such a great ending to the series. And Alan Cumming's voice is just amazing.

You know a book is good when you are genuinely mourning that it's over. Engaging.

Lovely.

Well written and interesting especially for someone who knows some of what happened in WW1. My only complaint is that the world was so well built that I wanted to know more about that then the characters. What beasties did France have?

Absolutely Beautiful Story

This is a series I have spend a long time reading, clinging onto every word, and this could not have been a better conclusion. I love especially how each character gets their moment to shine in the story.

The best of the bunch!

Westerfeld shows readers exactly how a conclusion book should read with GOLIATH; the last and by far the best of the Leviathan trilogy, ending it with quite a bang (on all fronts). But even with the series finishing out properly, I can’t say it won’t be missed. I admit I fell in love a little bit more with each thrilling installment. I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to a spin-off???..What do ya say Scott?

Well, whether or not we get another taste of Alek and Deryn or the addictive and exciting steampunk/biopunk world of Westerfeld’s creation is to be seen, but as for now, readers are sure to become quick fans of the daft Austrian prince, the not so common Midshipman and their adventures on the Leviathan, in this fast paced action pack world of power hungry rulers, nutter scientists, manufactured beasties and iron war machines. Bravo and well-done! And as always, Cumming outdoes himself in the narration... brilliant performance!!

Amazing narration

This is fluff steampunk, but this is an amazing audiobook because Alan Cumming does such an impressive job jumping in and out of male/female/adult/teen/mutant/ voices with English/American/Austrian/Slavic accents. There are many talented narrators on Audible, but his performance in this series is really a tour de force.

4.5 ending book

Despite some drudgery in the middle of the book and some silly ending eye-rolling moments, this was a pretty solid ending to the series.

As always, Cumming's narration was impeccable and engaging.
