Publisher's summary

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy.

So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves.

Complicated? Awkward? Completely.

But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary. Julie wasn’t supposed to be important to the Watkins family, or to fall in love with one of the brothers. Especially the one she’s never quite met. But what does that really matter? Finn gets her, like no one ever has before. They have connection. But here’s the thing about love, in all its twisty, bumpy permutations - it always throws you a few curves. And no one ever escapes unscathed.

Such a cute story

If you could sum up Flat-Out Love in three words, what would they be?

Modern. Sweet. Clever.

What did you like best about this story?

A lot of stories with 'surprises' do a bad job with them, and this one did a good job. I had guessed before the reveal, but I liked how they did the reveal and then the open questions had answers that made sense.

I loved the sweetness the author captured. Young love is hard to describe in a way that rings true, and yet is not annoying to adult readers, but she got it.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

Everything. I love Julia Whelan - so much that I often pick books based on her being the narrator. I have yet to see a bad performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

What does it mean when you fit in to a group people you perceive as misfits?

Any additional comments?

This story is YA, but as a not-so-young adult, I enjoyed it quite a lot.

I flat out loved this book

not exactly what i was expecting when i read the blurb of the book. I knew what was going on very early on in the book but still didn't make me like it any less. I loved the characters (especially celeste) I loved all the quirkiness. Made me laugh out loud & tear up at times.

Fun Fun Fun!

I enjoyed the story and the narration was very good. Somewhere towards the middle of the story, I was able to guess the outcome of the story but it did not keep me from staying engaged throughout the entire story. This was a nice, light, romance with a refreshing lack of overt sex scenes.

Delightful creative story with strong female lead

I have already listened to this book 3 times, I love it so much. It's the story of a college student who "likes a challenge" coming to live with a family in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Every character in the book was fascinating to me, from the well grounded, kind-hearted Julie to the nerdy MIT student Matt, and especially young Celeste, with her eccentricities. The romance in this book touched my heart and I fell in love with all the characters. Each scene is essential to the book, and the humorous lines are expertly delivered by Julia Whelan. There's a late night drunken phone conversation that is exceptionally funny. The sad parts will wrench your heart and the story builds to a satisfying climax.

I recommend this book for ANYONE.

A very satisfying listen/read

I really enjoyed listening to this book and thought the performance was very good. The performer portrays emotion and vocal nuances very well and for the most part the character voices are easily distinguishable. While it took me a little time to connect with the protagonist, she is likable and develops throughout the story. The story has depth, is intriguing, and is easily relatable for a wide audience due to its realistic and quirky nature.

This was in the "Romance" category, and while there is a romance within the book it's story would hold up well without it, which is not very common in the romance genre. I would categorize it as Young Adult - Contemporary - Coming-of-Age, and think it could be enjoyed by "Tweens" through adults (depending on the maturity level of the child). Check it out, and as always with audiobooks, give it a fair chance to draw you in since it often takes time to get accustomed to the performer and writing style. I hope this helps a little bit.

A Wonderful YA Story that will fill your heart!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would definitely recommend this audio book because the characters really come to life and you join their world as you listen. I loved the story and felt such a connection with all of the characters not just Julie.

What other book might you compare Flat-Out Love to and why?

I don't really have anything to compare it to. It really stood out as a great read and something unlike anything else I've read or listened to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The elevator scene was great, but I also loved the going away party.

Any additional comments?

This is in my top 5 audio books ever and though my list is quite short, I think it will remain close to the top always.
