Publisher's summary

Ann Aguirre's thrilling young adult novel Enclave is the story of two young people in an apocalyptic world - facing dangers, and feelings, unlike any they've ever known. New York City has been decimated by war and plague, and most of civilization has migrated to underground enclaves, where life expectancy is no more than the early 20's. When Deuce turns 15, she takes on her role as a Huntress, and is paired with Fade, a teenage Hunter who lived Topside as a young boy.

When she and Fade discover that the neighboring enclave has been decimated by the tunnel monsters - or Freaks - who seem to be growing more organized, the elders refuse to listen to warnings. And when Deuce and Fade are exiled from the enclave, the girl born in darkness must survive in daylight - guided by Fade's long-ago memories - in the ruins of a city whose population has dwindled to a few dangerous gangs.

3-1/2

I would give this a three and a half for the story. The narrator was so bad that I kept falling asleep. I might like to read more of this series if a different narrator is picked.

LOVE the story

I love the narrator, and I think she gives a certain youth to Deuce that she doesn’t show in personality, and that makes the character that much more real. Overall, I love this story and thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Good for a tween

The book overall is written well. Only problem is the reader has a fairy princess voice and ruins the story a fair amount.

Imaginative but with unfulfilled potential

Overall I found Enclave to be worth the time it took to get through it. Which when you're offering up 7 plus hours of your life to a book, I think that is a compliment.

This is by no account the most well written YA book I've read. But it is not offensive or painful to get through. It drags in parts, it's character development is rather shallow, and it does not live up to its potential. On the other hand, it has a lot of imagination. A lot of people have created some very similar dystopian societies and I love finding one that I don't feel as though I have visited before. I won't pick apart the book any further. I will just say give it a try and leave it at that.

fantasy fun

I have heard all three books in the series and loved every minute. Sometimes I get so involved with the characters I forget this is not real. This is one of those series.

Interesting concept but that voice...

What did you like best about Enclave? What did you like least?

This seems like a good story but I CANNOT continue. The narrator's voice seems very young, whiny, and giggly/gleeful in the most inappropriate parts of the story. It's really rough to listen to and it is the reason I have quit listening to this book and will not buy the next in the series.

Good story, horrible narrator

Honestly, I had to stop listening to this. I like the story, but the narrator really ruins it for me. It's like listening to one of the chipmunks read the book. Awful...

Another Romance Masquerading as SF

So boring... So many cliches. I managed to listen to this all the way through but couldn't help rolling my eyes every couple of minutes. Don't be fooled by the summary readers. Post apocalyptic thriller is just a "skin" for the romance novel drivel, it's like the plastic sleeve you probably cover your MP3 with. This is your typical perfect but troubled teen male meets perfect yet troubled female and all is well until they meet another beautiful but troubled male and then there is "conflict" and "drama". I don't know why this book has mutants in it, they seem totally superfluous.

Annoying Narrator

While the story itself is certainly engaging, but the reader ruined it. I would recommend reading this instead of listening to it.

Narrator distracted me from the story

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator had a tendency to do a weird self deprecating laugh when describing something about the main character. There were several times that it was very out of place. They were the middle of an attack and the character said something that sounded like it should have been strong but it had that laugh. All of the characters sounded really young. I get that they were in the late teens or early twenties but she made them sound younger. I don't know if it was just the writing or the narrator but I have not enjoyed this one at all.
