Publisher's summary

From the author of the Mindspeak series comes the first in a brand new dystopian romance series.

Six years ago, a highly contagious virus wiped out more than 99 percent of the country's population. The only person to contract the virus and survive, Cricket fled her identity and the safety of New Caelum, an airtight city. Now 18, she watches the city where the wealthy cocooned from the devastating outbreak. When the city's rumbling incinerator wakes her one night while she and her friends are camping just beyond the city walls, she alone knows what the fiery machine means: the lethal virus is back.

Only 18, Westlin Layne is already being groomed to succeed his mother as New Caelum's next president. Suddenly West's sister develops symptoms of the deadly virus thought to be eradicated years ago. Placed under quarantine, the president confesses to West a long-held secret: Christina Black, West's childhood friend and first love, survived the virus, and her body alone holds the precious antibodies to save his sister.

Now West must leave the city to find Christina. But Cricket has no intention of being found.

loved it!

I love these kind of books.
I like to imagine what a world like they describe would look like and how they survive but I also love when they have a love story mixed in to because I'm a romantic. lol. I did cringe at a couple parts when the characters act dumb but I would still recommended it because it was worth the listen!
I think this would be cool to be made into a movie saga but that's just me.

Surprisingly good!

The author provided me with a complimentary copy of this audiobook with no expectation of a review. Let me start by saying I am NOT a fan of science fiction, apocalypse, or dystopian type books. However, I was shocked to find myself liking this book! I wasn't sure until after the first 3-4 chapters but by then I was hooked.

There are two things I WASN'T thrilled with. First, the ending. I still had SO many questions that it felt as though a chapter or epilogue were missing. Second, I would have preferred for one narrator perform the entire book. Since each chapter is labeled with the name of the character whose POV is being told, there was no need to have both a male and female narrator. One could have easily played ALL parts and it would have been easier to tell who was speaking. Obviously, it's not possible for one narrator to mimic another narrator's voice exactly and, therefore, the characters' voices changed from chapter to chapter.

Other than those two things, I enjoyed the book. Even though there were two narrators (and it took me out of the story trying to figure out which character that narrator was speaking for), it is still an enjoyable listen. However, because of the way it ended, I had to immediately purchase both of the remaining books in the series so I could find out what happened.
