Publisher's Summary

As best-selling author Kenneth C. Davis knows, history can be fun, fascinating, and memorable. When his Don't Know Much About History was published in 1990, it was a sensation. The book delivered a fresh take on history with its wit and unusual detail. Davis now does for young people what his earlier book did for adults. In his trademark question-and-answer style Davis introduces our ancestors who settled the East and expanded the West, as well as those who had been living here all along. His sure touch brings the drama and excitement of the American story vividly to life.

"An enjoyable look into our past"

I decided to try this "book" since it is much shorter than the more general History version by this same author. I have always been interested in our history but could never deal with the dry, educational texts. The question and answer format of this audio book was very enjoyable. The author bounces between historical people (e.g. Washington, Lincoln, Patrick Henry, etc.), events (e.g. Revolutionary war, Civil War, prohibition, etc.), and other short topics. It became less interesting as he moved into more recent events, but overall it was well worth the listen.

"perfect for my 10 yr old"
What did you love best about Don't Know Much About American History?

    The simplicity

    Any additional comments?

I also boughtDon't know much about Hisrory, which is more for adults, but I found this kid friendly version easier to follow and memorize. My son really liks it, and is able to recall details after listening. he wasn't able to do that with "Don't Know Much about History.

Keeps our American history fresh in your mind! Nice voice, keeps you engaged!
A wonderful tool for a SS teacher or a LA teacher, great way to preface a novel based in American history.

    "One Date After Another"

The book gives too many details too quickly for an audio listener. It is one quick fact, date, person, or birth and death after another. I had expected and would have enjoyed more anecdotes.

"For those who failed History in high school"
What did you like best about Don't Know Much About American History? What did you like least?

I listened to this book on the recommendation of an acquaintance because he knows me as a history buff. I should have read the reviews as I knew 95% of the material. The author writes the book for those who struggled with language beyond middle-school, or high school if you live in many of the states who supported the confederacy. There's nothing wrong with this as maybe half of US citizens would benefit from reading (or listening) to it. If you are foreign born, this might be good material to know if you are considering citizenship. On the other hand, if you're looking for a substantive book on American History I might recommend John Michael Greer's book "Rise and Fall". That book will provide sound reasons for the study of history and leave you with much to think about.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This question does not apply to a history book.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    The narration was fine.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Books on history don't make for good movies.
