Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Best Teens Category, 2013

A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's...Dodger.

Seventeen-year-old Dodger may be a street urchin, but he gleans a living from London's sewers, and he knows a jewel when he sees one. He's not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl - not even if her fate impacts some of the most powerful people in England.

From Dodger's encounter with the mad barber Sweeney Todd to his meetings with the great writer Charles Dickens and the calculating politician Benjamin Disraeli, history and fantasy intertwine in a breathtaking account of adventure and mystery.

Beloved and best-selling author Sir Terry Pratchett combines high comedy with deep wisdom in this tale of an unexpected coming-of-age and one remarkable boy's rise in a complex and fascinating world.

Lots of history done in a fun way

Fun read, if you are tired of sci-fi, romance, or car chase mystery's, you might find this a fun little read. Charles Dickens is a newspaper writer who meets a young cove named Doger, a tosher who works the sewers of London.. who lives with an old Jew and prays to the Lady of the sewers or the Roman goddess Cloacina. Lots of history done in a fun way, more like history-ish...

Pratchett’s great Victorian Fantasy.

Pratchett’s great Victorian Fantasy

This is Pratchett on a different level, bringing his great wit and pun fulled sense of humour to a Victorian Fantasy with a little poetic license.

It’s an amazing off-shoot from his normal Discworld and as enjoyable.

Loving Victorian history Pratchett has filled the book with little gems to remind us of the era.

I do so miss this Author. Wish he could still have given us more great works to read.

Classic Pratchett, even outside of Discworld canon

I have hugely enjoyed the Discworld series, listening to some favorites over and over during last years (and decades), but was never really aware of the writing outside the DW canon. Consider my positive surprise when I found this book. Maybe I wouldn't immediately crown it the best of all creation, but it gets a place on the podium and deserves a read or listen. Plus, it has a happy ending.

Great story, well-written, wonderful performance

What did you love best about Dodger?

Loved the use of contemporary slang. Listened to this book with my 13-year-old son and we both enjoyed it very much. It started a little slowly, but once we got into it, we were hooked!

Proof that Terry Pritchett is a genius, even beyond Discworld.

Stephen Briggs gives an excellent performance of this historical fantasy combining real and fictional characters into a lovely tale full of laughs and wisdom.
