"Though Galvin’s narration is concentrated on giving Tris the perfect voice, she never neglects the secondary characters. Poignant moments with Tris’s mother and Four, her leader and love, are subtly nuanced to let listeners hear the terror Tris often hides.... listeners will hold their breath waiting to see if she can survive the day." Divergent is actually an interesting book. In particular the concept, however the series overall is extremely disappointing.
I read the Hunger game series years before this series and this series is lacking in comparison. I enjoyed the concept/idea of this book, but be warned this is a trilogy.
I enjoyed her reading of the book(s) Pity the series overall is so lacking.
The first book is great. The second book is also pretty good. I hated the third book and not because of it's ending. I just could not finish the book. So for me this series would get 1 star. The only reason I know about "the gasp" ending is because someone it work asked me if that's why I didn't finish it. For anyone who enjoys a good, solid, well written ending to a series this series is not for you.
Yes I enjoyed reading the book and Emma Galvin is a great narrator
Ok, honestly I thought I was going to throw my phone to the ground if I heard 'He said' 'I said' 'she said' one more time. It was doing my head in and I some how put up with it throughout the next two books
Yes, the differences where there
in line with Hunger games and The Host
She is a fantastic narrator, no silly voices
Give it a go, you will soon be enthralled.
I purchased this book as I had seen the film, and it did not disappoint.
The screenplay remained true to the book. It was easy to read but descriptive and engrossing. Listed as a book for teenagers, I found it enjoyable in the lack of adult themes. With an open mind, give it a try.
This audio book was performed beautifully, really bringing the characters to life and lends to the listener really getting into the story and the characters on an emotional level, something not as easily accomplished with a print version.
I think most people would go for the climax to the book ( I won't give it away if you haven't read it!), but honestly I couldn't pick one moment. The introduction to the characters, watching their stories unfold, how bonds are made and enemies are created before the main event, was equally as gripping to listen too.
Emma Galvin's performance of Divergant, and the other books in the series, was truly spectacular. For me personally, she is one of my favourite voice actors of any audio book. She has clearly thought through all of the characters and really gets into it, making it all that more compelling a read for the listener.
Well there is a film that has been recreated already (which I would also highly recommend) and that uses 'What Makes You Different, Makes You Dangerous'. I think that perfectly sums it up.
If you love any kind of romance story, you'll love this. This was my first kind of 'action/adventure' read and was completely unsure of it when I started, but now I'm completely hooked! Definitely give it a listen!
"This is a gripping book to listen to!"
It is the book that got me addicted to audible!
The Ferrari landscape was very well articulated!
She doesn't over express things which I love there is nothing worse than when your really getting into a book and then are totally dropped out of it by a cringy over expression
Will you make the cut!
"Won't be able to stop listening"
Definitely, it's hard to stop listening to this book. You can carry on with your day but have what is similar to a movie soundtrack in your head and let your imagination take over.
I'd compare it to the Hunger Games. Not in story, but in characters. Strong female characters with combat training and lots to overcome. Great story.
Tris is my favourite. She's an awesome character, complex but not confusing.
I wasn't really emotionally provoked by this book but it still had me wanting more.
I downloaded the sequels to this book too and I would definitely recommend them!
"Ok if the 3 book novel had been condensed to one"
The novel was gripping enough that I wanted to know how it ended but beware that means working through and paying for 3 books. Overall that was not worth it in my view. The cheap trick of mind bending drugs meant it was easy to build up characters as trustworth only to show them later was not trustworthy and visa versa. The relationship developed between the characters also at first seemed ok but later became irritating. So if all 3 books were condensed to one it would be a good read but as it is it just drags on.
The performance of the reader was good.
"Wow - I was simply blown away!"
This is not my typical genre for listening to, however, the reviews persuaded me to give it a go and I have honestly never been more delightfully surprised in my life! What a gripping, action-packed story (with a hint of romance yet to come).
The story concept is an extremely intelligent one: the world has changed - there is a new way of governing and reducing conflict by separating individuals into 'factions' according to one of five character traits. But what happens when individuals do not have one clear character trait? Well, they are the 'divergent' and present a threat to this new society as they have the ability to think more freely....
The emotions this book evoked were incredibly powerful: I was annoyed at the obsequious and self-denial of the abnegation; irritated by the supercilious nature of the erudite; amused at the forthright nature of the candour; at peace with the amity, and both exhilarated and shocked by the energy and ruthlessness of the dauntless. The story was graphic and violent on many occasions but this was well balanced by the vulnerability of the two main characters: Triss and Four, and the developing tenderness in their relationship.
The narration by Emma Galvin grew on me over time, although initially I felt it was very monotone and this made it difficult to distinguish between the characters, their thoughts and their speech. I probably became accustomed to it over time and felt she injected more contour and intonation into her narration as the story developed.
Without a doubt, this is a powerful and gripping read with a strong and well thought-out plot - it had me on the edge of my seat throughout and has left me desperate to read the next book!
I would recommend this audiobook to people who haven't encountered audio stories before, although I tend not to repeat my own experiences again!
The story was intense, and the narration by Emma Galvin was superb. The world that Veronica Roth creates is extreme an unusual, and I am left wanting more. I immediately downloded the second and third books in the series to continue the journey of Tris.
Emma voice has a beautiful young gravelly sound which was perfect for the complex emotional yet tough Tris.
A world of Danger and Duplicity.
Once you start listening you can't stop. I'm hooked, can't wait to start reading/listening to Insurgent hope its as good.
Hunger Games, similar genre, when you get to know the characters and plot.
Great narrator, really draws you into the lives of the characters.
Not initially, but then you become compelled to find out what happens next to each of the characters.
I loved listening to this book, the story was really captivating. If you liked "The Hunger Games" you'll love this, and if you haven't read"The Hunger Games", what is wrong with you?!
It was similar setting to "The Hunger Games", but really they are completely different
Great performance of the book, kept it interesting and didn't bore me.
Overall it was just pretty awesome!
