Publisher's summary

"Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't."

Lauren Oliver astonished readers with her stunning debut, Before I Fall. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it "raw, emotional, and, at times, beautiful. An end as brave as it is heartbreaking." Her much-awaited second novel fulfills her promise as an exceptionally talented and versatile writer.

Also included is a sneak listen to the first chapter of the next book in the series. Enjoy!

Really interesting read, very enjoyable

We on the outside may say we would never understand why someone would be so willing to let your community take away something so precious as our ability to love, something that defines our humanity. The story shows us through Lena that it can be easily done when it's all you've ever known, and you've been told Love is a horrible and fatal disease. We know it isn't right, but Lena tells us she has grown up fearing the possibility of catching the disease, so she is very eager to go through the procedure to make her immune. She's seen her mother go crazy from it and the community even shows a kind of horrible PSA news broadcasts of a girl who threw herself off a building because she was "infected".
I really enjoyed this book. I went into it thinking, oh it's a story where love is outlawed but the protagonist falls in love anyway. And yes, this is what happens. But it was more than that. It shows how important love is, that we need it. Love can make us dangerous, but it also gives us life. The story is a bit predictable, but there's enough surprises to make it interesting and to keep reading. The narrator is very good, you can really picture Lena in your head while listening. I can't wait to start the second book!

Beautiful writing with an excellent reader

I never write reviews but I bought this books based on the many reviews saying how great the writing was. I love YA sci-fi and fantasy, but I also love literature with great writing and beautiful prose. This book is a rare combination of both.

Also, it must be said that Sarah Drew did a remarkable job. I've listened to around two dozen audiobooks so far, and the best of those readers do not even come close to her performance. Because the writing is so good, I don't think I would have liked the book less had I read it myself. In fact, I might want to read it eventually. But listening Sarah Drew being this story to life was a wonderful experience in and of itself.

Protagonist is horribly annoying & story is OKAY

I'm 25 and typically teen/YA books are my favorite, but this one is definitely geared more for young teens. The concept of this book is very interesting, but the way the story is told is very slow. I quickly came to dislike Lena, the protagonist of the story, because she was just so winey and extremely immature for a 17 year old (acted more like 13). The voice actor's performance was very true to character and well done, but unfortunately since I didn't like the character, I found it horribly annoying. The story line did hold me on enough to want to hear how it ends, but likely won't push me to the 2nd book in the series. I'd rather spend my credits elsewear and I can guarantee you that if I was reading the physical book instead of listening, I never would have finished it.

Narration more than disappointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. I had to force myself to listen to it because the narration was so grating. There were times I just had to turn it off or fast-forward past the suspense sequences.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most: The disinformation about the dissenters, the crypt, isolation of the

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Completely... it seemed she was acting the book rather than narrating it

Did Delirium inspire you to do anything?

Unfortunately, it has inspired me to abandon listening to the series - I may try to read the second book in hard-copy.

Any additional comments?

The narration ruined this book for me. I was very excited to be able to listen to a new dystopian series that had such good book reviews. It was a short-sighted decision to use a narrator that was so cliched and over-emotive. The narration was particularly grating when the story line became suspenseful. With such a good story-line, the suspense is created with the words themselves - not with the narrator speaking extremely quickly, voiced raised and breathless... It was just too much! I believe this series could have been as well received as the Hunger Games or Maximum Ride series. Sadly, I believe the narration of Delirium will prevent this from happening. I did purchase Pandemonium but I will not force myself to listen to it but will go to the library and read the hard copy. Too bad

Surprisingly good.

When I began listening to this book I braced myself for something along the lines of Goosebumps because the reader sounded like a twelve year old. I have actually enjoyed a few of the books out there that are written for teens so I wasn't put off by the youthful voice completely and decided to continue listening. I'm glad I did. The story reminded me a lot of the Unwind series which I really enjoyed. Yes I believe this series was written for teens and young adults but I would recommend it just as easily to my over the hill friends as I would to my teen aged niece.

Interesting concept

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It was really ingesting to think about life without love--without passion. I thought the concept was well thought out and very unique.

Any additional comments?

I feel like too much time was spent developing the story... It seemed like it took forever to reach that point where I truly wanted to keep listening. Fortunately, Sarah Drew did an excellent job narrating. It's worth listening to. I don't regret the download even if I didn't give the story 4 or 5 stars.

Interesting Story Line

This book was interesting. It took me a minute to get into it mostly because I couldn't fathom a world where love was outlawed. I had a hard time wrapping my brain around it, and I was annoyed with the characters and the way they defended their way of living and thinking. But I kept on listening and it gets really good. I enjoyed how the characters fell in love, and how this love affected the path they were on in such a life altering way. It was kind of annoying honestly though listening to Sarah Drew because her character drives me crazy on Grey's Anatomy. It's hard to picture anything but Sarah's face in my mind when she was talking instead of trying to imagine her as Lena. Sarah did a good job on the narration, it was just the fact that I associate her voice with someone else that bothered me.
