Publisher's summary

The Spook and his apprentice, Thomas Ward, deal with the dark. Together they rid the county of witches, ghosts, and boggarts. But now there's some unfinished business to attend to in Priestown. Deep in the catacombs of the cathedral lurks a creature the Spook has never been able to defeat; a force so evil that the whole county is in danger of being corrupted by its powers. The Bane!

As Thomas and the Spook prepare for the battle of their lives, it becomes clear that the Bane isn't their only enemy. The Quisitor has arrived, searching for those who meddle with the dark so he can imprison them, or worse.

Can Thomas defeat the Bane on his own? Is his friend Alice guilty of witchcraft? And will the Spook be able to escape the Quisitor's clutches?

Critic reviews

"Delaney infuses his characters with depth and emotion, but equally important, he grows his world by contributing significantly to the back story....Kids will breathlessly await Tom's next adventure." (Booklist)

Thoroughly Enjoyable

This is the second book in this young adult series and it is definitely as good as the first. I am an adult and perhaps shouldn't be admitting to enjoying this series, but I do! The stories are excellent character-driven sotries and the narration is outstanding. I highly recommend this series.

Fills my Potter hole

I'm enjoying this series. I'm always in search of something to feel the Harry Potter void and this is doing a decent job of it.

I like Thomas. He's only 13 and he is holding his own ever since his mom sent him off against his will to train as the Spook's apprentice. It's a dangerous job and not glamorous at all, wrought with danger and weirdness around every corner. I like that it's dark.

We got to find out more about Tom's mother in this one and why she's special in her own right. That was very interesting. We still don't know what she really is and I want to know more.

I don't know how the Spook has lived to a somewhat old age because if it weren't for Thomas, both him and Alice would have been dead many times over.d

Speaking of Alice, I like her character. She's constantly walking the line between light and dark. I like that we don't know if we can trust her, if she's truly a witch, what she will do, what her motivations are. She's definitely complicated and she makes me nervous.

The voice the narrator did for the Bane was the creepiest thing I've ever heard. I almost got chills.

On to the next book.

Intense fun

This was an intense and fun listen. The narrator was perfectly matched to the content and overall it was well-read.
Parental warning: With the "body-pressing" and some of the other graphically detailed descriptions in this book, I will be waiting a year or two to share it with my ten yr old daughter.

great spooky story for all ages

once again Joseph Delany weaves a truly entertaining and genuinely spooky story replete with all types of sinister creatures and villians--great in the car --just kept me glued to the story waiting to see what would happen next--let go and put yourself there --in his haunting world of the "spook".

fast paced and scary

Fantasy with reality mixed in a way that makes you wonder if it was real, though logic tells you it's not. Love the narrative. The voice he has is just perfect for this kind of book. You learn the mother's backstory, in this one which provides a bit of anticipation for the next book.

Getting better

The story starts picking up and the main characters feel more mature despite clear Y/A orientation
