Fed up with her wild behavior, 16-year-old Lex’s parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach Lex the family business.
She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can’t stop her desire for justice - or is it vengeance? - whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?

Love this site! I have a very busy job, so listening to audio books enables me to keep up on great stories!
Because it's one of the smartest books ever! SOOOOOO funny, witty, clever, great story, unique characters, can't beat it!
I really liked the board game scene. Funny and very telling. The chemistry between Driggs and Lex. The bond between Mort and Lex. Good stuff!
She's one of my favorite voice actors. She has charm and diversity in all her voices. I enjoy all her work.
I would give this book 6 stars if I could. Can't wait for book 2!
In Croak, we first meet Lex, a troubled teen who doesn't fit in...until she discovers her calling as a reaper. This is a great series start. I can't wait to see if Lex seeks revenge or redemption in Scorch.
I am a fan of distopia and just can't seem to get my fill.
This book has some great banter between characters keeps you laughing and during this you forgive the learning curves of the world that can slow down other first books in a series. What the author lacks in mature characters she makes up for in fast and funny coming joke i recommend this for a car ride with kids.
I read this book first and then decided to listen to it. I love the story, The main character is a teen girl who up until lately has been a model student and daughter. no spoilers here, but suffice it to say there is a reason she went weird, and it makes for an interesting story!
Downside: While the reader definitely has the teenage voice down she kind of distracted me from the story.
Lex's partner, he really brought out the best in her.
Like I said, it was distracting.
The end, I'm not giving any spoilers!
Make no mistake: this is definitely a YA book. I've listened to quite a few YA books that were well crafted and enjoyable ("Firelight" by Sophie Jordan comes to mind), but between the attitude and the angst and unsophisticated storyline of "Croak", I probably will not be continuing with the series (unless it goes on sale maybe). It's not bad, just not engaging enough for my adult mind to latch on to.
This was difficult to listen to for me. The main character is a very angry person and the narration of the book is done in a sort of angry way which is hard to take hour after hour. Makes the main character feel very one dimensional and it made me feel a bit tense. Although I imagine that a younger audience might like this quite a bit (and I'm by no means old). In terms of narration and tone, it was a bit similar to Divergent which I also was not a big fan of. The premise was unique and some of the other characters were pretty likable, namely, Uncle Mort. However, that's not enough to make me want to continue with this series. Does not help matters that I predicted the ending long before I reached it.
It was a fun story that didn't take a lot of concentration. I worked and listened to it and made the day fly by.
I think Lex was my favorite character. Even though some of her antics were far fetched in the beginning of the book she turned funnier and more likeable by the end.
I'm almost a couple decades removed from being a teen so having the teen voice in my ear made it all the more real.
I'm a bibliophile since early childhood. Love speculative fiction, odd premises, mystery novels that teach about different places and times.
I found this book unexpected but fun. What do you do with your completely defiant teen. You tell them you're sending them to the family farm and then make them into a reaper. It's got some weak spots in the story, but it's a lot of fun.

Gina Damico has truly created a world that I never once thought could exist. A world where people souls are dependent upon humans that have been selected to play the role of a "Grim Reaper" that deliver the souls to the afterlife. Yes, I said humans, you could think of them as mutants in a way, as these people have special abilities that us normal people don't have. These people live in a real town called Croak, there happen to many similar towns throughout the world, where they go to work helping people get to the afterlife. But then the reapers start being attacked by an inconceivable killer, another reaper. Croak is really a young adult urban fantasy murder mystery that was quite entertaining by the great character and story building abilities of Damico. At times it did kind of feel like a super-natural Scooby Doo and the Gang mystery but that was just the young adult aspect shining through.
Hmm that is hard I loved the story line and the different spin from the one I have always associated with reapers which made it way more interesting. The narrator is simply amazing and pulls all 3 books of with such aplomb you almost forget she is not the author or the actual character.
I can't choose just one, because the whole book in fact all 3 were memorable. I can't believe one of the reviews went MEH and only gave it one or two stars, was she oxygen deprived when she was listening to this book.
Jessica brings these books alive, I have certainly become a Jessica Almasy groupie and intend to stalk every other audio book she has read. I pray they are all as good as Nancy Damico's wonderful stories. Jessica pulls of ever character in the book flawlessly.
If you loved Dead like Me you will love seeing the amazing Croak, Scorch and Rogue bought to life on our screens.
I hope and pray there is a 4th book in the pipeline. I think this young author has done a brilliant job, she is funny, imaginative and she hooks you in from page one. Please don't let anyone other then the amazing Jessica Almasy read them.
Lex is angry, she's gone from a grade A student to beating up anyone and everyone in her way. Her parents. twin sister and school are at their wits end and bundle her off to stay with her Uncle Mort.
What follows is an entertaining romp, with no let up, an escapist listen if you like romance, an outcast teen with extraordinary paranormal powers who shakes things up in sleepy supernatural Croak.
Lex has attitude she made me laugh, I especially fell in love with Uncle Mort and how he handles her wayward behavior. It has just the right amount of light humor and dark edginess that kept me listening.
