What the Critics Say

"Hopkins writes in free-verse poems that paint painfully sharp images...detailing how powerful the "monster" can be. The poems are masterpieces of word, shape, and pacing, compelling readers on to the next chapter in Kristina's spiraling world." (School LIbrary Journal)

    "Good just not for kids"

This duo was well written and eye opening. I listened to it because my 14 year old read "Crank." I do not think that these books are for that age group. I highly recommend that you listen to these books prior to allowing your kids read them. In my opinion these books are for older teens 17 and up. Nothing against these books as I said they are very good just a little too much info for kids under 17, especially "Glass."

There are few things in life better than losing yourself completely in a really exceptional story. I enjoy reading others' reviews.

    "Disappointing"

I'd heard nothing about this book or the author prior to investing a credit, but the title and synopsis sounded intriguing. Now having wasted 4+ hrs. listening to it, I can report without hesitation that there is nothing worthy of intrigue here. The writing is bizarre, particularly the initial chapters, consisting of nonsensical metaphors, mixed metaphors, and similes, as if the "assignment" was to construct a work of fiction with "X" number of literary devices contained within, regardless of the appropriateness of said devices. Then add to this confusing word salad the cadence, which is strangely poetical in nature, rather than literary. Two- and three-word sentences abound, and the choppiness is both distracting and obnoxious.

Regarding the plot, who cares? The main character, a teenaged girl, is never fully developed and to wit, I was never able to truly empathize with her. Her friends, especially "Buddy"/"Adam", are more caricatures of humans rather than fully human, as are her parents, siblings and everyone else in the cast. My basic rule of thumb is, if I don't "buy" the characters, I'm certainly not going to buy anything that happens to them. And I didn't.

I actually made it all the way to the end, but only because it's approx. 4 hrs. in length. If it had lasted any longer, I'd have shelved it permanently following the concluding sentence of Chap. 1. I hoped, of course, that it would get better. It doesn't. If you're in the market for a novel that depicts teenaged experimentation with street drugs that grabs your attention, this is not that book. This is, unfortunately, amateurish shlock that will only succeed in boring you to tears and wasting your credit.

    "Enticing."
If you could sum up Crank in three words, what would they be?

    Very, very captivating.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Bree. She's very saucy!

Which character – as performed by Laura Flanagan – was your favorite?

Kristina. At first I didn't like her as Kristina (In my head she sounded very different), but I soon came around. She does a great job!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Unfortunately I could not, but I returned when I could.

    Any additional comments?

    Awesome story!

    "NOT SURE ABOUT THIS ONE"

This book, just wasn't quite my cup of tea. It was ok, and it did tell me about the addict, but this type of book, is not my usual. It was well written, however and most people may like it.

"A book all parents should read/listen to!"
Would you try another book from Ellen Hopkins and/or Laura Flanagan?

    Possibly

Which character – as performed by Laura Flanagan – was your favorite?

Kristina - My heart went out to her.

Was Crank worth the listening time?

Yes and parents should take the time!!!!

    Any additional comments?

This is an amazingly true to life portrayal of a young woman giving in to peer pressure. "Crank" is a huge problem in America today and this story tells how someone can just get caught in its web. The narrator makes the story worth listening to. She makes the story real in your mind. If I had purchased the book I do not know if I would have appreciated the meaning of the book as much as the audio version. Overall, the narrator made this a must listen for all parents of teens. You have no idea what your kids may become involved in unless you involve yourself in every aspect of their lives. The father in this story is a prime example of a parent who sees his daughter as a friend instead of a daughter. Honestly he treated her more like someone he met in a bar or at a party. He does not deserve to be a parent. Not able to have children myself I can see by watching friends with kids how tempting it is to treat your kids like friends. But you need to treat them as your child. It is your job to raise them to be the best they can in this life. They will rebel now because that is just the nature of children. But in later years they will know you just had their best interests in your mind by taking on the job of being the authority figure in their lives.

    Story
    "Great insight into an addiction."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a great insight into how easily young people can fall into an addiction. It really shows how Meth is a problem that any person is at risk of and how quickly it can completely change a person's life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Buddy, it is amazing how he plays innocent and troublesome at the same time. The way he is one of the biggest contributors to the problem, while trying to be a good person is so intriguing.

What does Laura Flanagan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The way that she portrays the attitude of the teenagers is spot on. It really adds a lot to the understanding of why they behave as they do.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was really moved by the way that Chase was willing to raise the child an forgo his dreams even though it was not his child.

    Any additional comments?

Excellent book, but I wish there was a little more closure to the story.

"Reads like a bad teenage angst poem"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less one word sentences and more complete thoughts. I understand it may be supposed to lend an air of disconnect or possibly drug induced randomness, however it does not succeed.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Laura Flanagan?

    probably not

    "Amazing! :)"
Would you consider the audio edition of Crank to be better than the print version?

No, because I haven't read the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Crank?

When she gets raped and when she finds out Brendan is the father to her baby.

What does Laura Flanagan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voice compliments the character she's portraying.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It didn't make me laugh or cry, but there was a moment or two where my jaw dropped.

    Any additional comments?

Overall this was a very good book, and I enjoyed it.
