Publisher's summary

Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high-school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absentee father, she meets a boy who introduces her to crank. At first she finds it freeing, but soon Kristina's personality disappears inside the drug. What began as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell for her mind, her soul, and her life.

Critic reviews

"Hopkins writes in free-verse poems that paint painfully sharp images...detailing how powerful the "monster" can be. The poems are masterpieces of word, shape, and pacing, compelling readers on to the next chapter in Kristina's spiraling world." (School LIbrary Journal)

Any additional comments?

This is an amazingly true to life portrayal of a young woman giving in to peer pressure. "Crank" is a huge problem in America today and this story tells how someone can just get caught in its web. The narrator makes the story worth listening to. She makes the story real in your mind. If I had purchased the book I do not know if I would have appreciated the meaning of the book as much as the audio version. Overall, the narrator made this a must listen for all parents of teens. You have no idea what your kids may become involved in unless you involve yourself in every aspect of their lives. The father in this story is a prime example of a parent who sees his daughter as a friend instead of a daughter. Honestly he treated her more like someone he met in a bar or at a party. He does not deserve to be a parent. Not able to have children myself I can see by watching friends with kids how tempting it is to treat your kids like friends. But you need to treat them as your child. It is your job to raise them to be the best they can in this life. They will rebel now because that is just the nature of children. But in later years they will know you just had their best interests in your mind by taking on the job of being the authority figure in their lives.

Good story narrator made it hard to listen at times

The rhyming of parts of the story were at times difficult to listen to. The narrator didn’t do a great job reading through that part difficult to listen to.

Not how I expected it to go

At first I didn’t like the way the story was told with the coffee shop poetry reading vibe but it grew on me and I ended up appreciating it and the creativity it showed. For the main character I was sad, disappointed and also proud. Great story. Terrifyingly realistic.

Core Memory Unlocked …

I found this book, again, by accident. I read it a long time ago & when i saw it flash across the main page it was like a core memory from way back then unlocked & i knew instantly i had to download it! i re-read & finished in under 2 days! to say im hooked, back then & now again, is an understatement. The story hits home - as a child of a user, not a user myself. there’s lots of emotions the main character deals with & not that i know how it may feel, watching someone you love spiral, yet somewhat thrive too is strange. This book is amazing & with it being totally free you need to read this series! 3 books in total. amazing. hands down. i felt allllll the feels.

Great book!

Loved this story and it really sucks you in. I just wanted to keep listening nonstop. My only complaint is the narrator. I didn’t like her voice at first, but you get used to it.

Great Book. Can't wait to continue...

Written so well you could "see" the book actually as a movie in your mind's eye. I love Ellen Hopkins's her books are real, raw and they keep you hanging on every word. Wanting to find out how each & every word flows into the next. Being able to hear the words as they form a movie in your mind. This book is absolutely amazing, relatable and absolutely takes you into a world some have never experienced. However it's also a world many HAVE experienced. I can't wait to continue the series!
I absolutely would listen or read this book again!

Didn't love the speaker..

I enjoyed the story and felt it was very relatable, but the speakers voice got to. be a bit annoying after awhile.
