Publisher's summary

All her life Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lived with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt's South Carolina plantation instead - a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.

Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

Critic reviews

"Boone's debut mixes a Southern gothic setting with fantasy and romance for an engrossing, albeit over-the-top mystery." ( School Library Journal)

Great book. Okay reader.

The narrator just never clicked with me. She sounded so bored all the time. Still love the book. :)

Interested

I liked the narrator and overall enjoyed the book itself. I liked the characters and got into the book swiftly. I was turned on by the thought of a mystery in a small town involving three families and their powers. But, the pacing didn't feel right. The middle section of the book felt slow before the ending came suddenly and ended almost abruptly. In other words, it was over before I knew it. Not my favorite read, but not my least favorite by any means either. I liked it still so I gave a middle of the road reading.

That being said, I hope book 2 and 3 get narrated as an audio book because I do want to listen to them.

Narrator terrible!

The book is wonderful but the narrator sounds like a computer recording not a real person.

Glad I held on

This book was a slow started but I am glad I held on. The mystery of solving or correcting the feud was very interesting and make it a worth wild read. I did not care for the sappy start or the aunts sad demure in the beginning. But loved the ending. And the determination 8 Bofart showed pursuing His unexpected love. Overall great story. I see there is a book 2, not sure what a continuation would look like but i may check it out .
