Publisher's summary

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that enter-ing the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death.

To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City -- whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times best-selling trilogy The Mortal Instruments.

One of my Top Five Favorites!!

So, what do you get when you take a 16 year old New York girl and her family and friends, and throw her into a supernatural world full of action and adventure?? You get this wonderful series, unlike anything I've read, but similar enough that I feel right at home with it's crazy elements. Narrator on the first one is too young (they call this YA, but I don't think so), the second book is better, but this one is hands down the BEST. Hated to finish it-- in three days!! If you like supernatural and romance stuff without crappy over used sex scenes, then you will love this series.

LOVED IT - A Must Read!

All I can say is this series is perfect. Better than any fantasy/sci-fi (yes, including Twilight) and I CANNOT WAIT for the film and the next book. A must read!!!

To YA

Read from May 12 to June 22, 2012

Read/Listened for Fun
Overall Rating: 3.50
Story Rating: 3.75
Character Rating: 3.25

Audio Rating: 4.50 (not part of the overall rating)

First thought when finished: The epilogue and Simon pretty much pulled the book out of the "2" category for me!

What did I Love: I really love the richness of the world that Casandra Clare has created. She know how to bring elements in that makes it seem very familiar and yet it is something utterly unique. Simon was possibly my favorite character in City of Glass. He has come such a long way since book 1 and it is nice that he is embracing his vampire side. I also loved the epilogue. I felt that it pulled together all 3 books in a way that was believable and not over stated.

What I Liked: Jace and Clary really kind of grew on me the 2nd half of City of Glass. I started to really like their spirit and spunk. I felt they both came into their own and really owned who they were. Plus I was glad that the storyline that I could not stand finally got tied up (though it still took to much of the book).

What made me go huh?: I had a few problems with this book but they all seemed to resolve themselves in the 2nd half. I didn't like the bro/sis storyline and it just got creepier as it went on. Also, I have to admit not a fan of the parents (parental figures) letting the kids run all over them. I just don't like that particular story device. However, none of these would bug a huge fan of YA.

Audio Rating: Narrated by Natalie Moore, the audio for the book is pretty well done. The pacing, accents, and pronunciations were delivered with ease. I will be continuing the series in audio. Running time was 15 hours 21 min.

Final Thought: Fans of the series will love this for all the loose ends it ties up.

Terrific Imagery

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I don't believe the narration aids the storytelling, but still better than having to read it on my own!

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the plot twists this book held and enjoyed traveling with our beloved characters.

Excellent for all ages!

My daughter suggested Cassandra Clare's series, The Mortal Instruments. I read the first two in paper-back. OUTSTANDING witting by Cassandra Clare, and a great down-load. HIGHLY suggest this one, and the first two, as audio books!

Pretty good!

I enjoyed all of the Mortal Instruments books, while some parts do seem to be a bit over-explained (thoughts of the characters get very detailed & occasionally stray a bit), it is an enjoyable series. I found myself wanting the 4th book......but it looks like I will have to read the 'prequel' coming soon! I read these as I saw the author of TWILIGHT reads Cassandra's books, and that was intriguing enough (as I am always searching for new GOOD content to listen to!). Worth the listen!

This narrator makes for a lackluster experience

I won't comment too much on the story itself because tbh this series is a long-time favorite of mine, but while listening to them again (its been several years since I've read/listened to them), I just find myself continually irritated with Natalie Moore (narrator).

Her accents are not good, but despite this she keeps giving characters - who are not written as having accents - accents of all kinds. Her voices are inconsistent; she will suddenly give a character a thicker accent or a deeper tone, for example, which leaves you momentarily confused by who is speaking. She is also terribly lazy at reading lines as if the character were actually saying them in the moment; like for example reading a line plainly when both the text itself and context state the character is out of breath or whispering. I really wish there was more effort put into this recording, because so much of it sounds like they just did a single read and couldn't be bothered to re-do or edit anything.

The story is good, a solid 3rd book in a series-within-a-series. While maybe the most controversial of TMI, it does build a really solid foundation for the remainder of the series. Seriously, so much happens in this book that is important later, I didn't realize how much was in this installment until this re-read.

My 4/5 stars is closer to a 3 for the audiobook, but for the sake of the story itself being something I enjoy, I didn't want to rate it too low. I do wish they would re-record ALL of these books with a consistent and accurate narrator (give one narrator a series each, like Finty Williams with The Last Hours! That was so great!), because it would make the listening experience so much better. I listen to audiobooks so I can work or do chores at the same time, otherwise I would skip this one (and City of Ashes, due to the same narrator) and read the paper version for the sake of my own sanity. I regularly found myself complaining out loud about this narrator, and ended up listening at a much faster speed than normal so I could be done sooner.
