Worth the Hype!

“Cinder” had been on my radar for quite a while. There is no doubt that this book is both hyped and acclaimed in the Audible and Goodreads world. Sadly, that has not always worked well for me. I was thus pleased when I finally got my ears on this book.

I cruised back and forth between 4 and 5 stars and even now I can make arguments for both ratings. Either way, it is quite good. Initially I wasn’t drawn to yet another rendition of Cinderella. Fortunately, while some of the framework is there, Meyer transcends the aged story and brings in new life. The writing was solid and the characters were well drawn. The plot was not only different than Cinderella but was innovative and modern. Cinder herself, was a strong and capable heroine and I loved the fact that she is Asian . However, what I liked most about Meyer’s take is the character of Prince Kai. Far too often in these types of works the male protagonist trends to the boring, insulting and occasionally abusive bad boy type. I tend to think less of the main character for having any interest in these types of men. Kai is incredibly well written. Strong yet fragile, intelligent yet naïve. He is undoubtedly one of the best male characters I have read in young adult fiction.

The main reason I decided not to elevate “Cinder” to 5 stars has to do with originality. While Meyer updated the story brilliantly, she still had to take the basic framework of “Cinderella” to achieve her goal. Sadly, she really didn’t need to do this. “Cinder” differs so much from the source material that it wouldn’t have taken much to make it a completely independent work. Meyer seemed to occasionally force “Cinderella” references to fit her story. I simply cannot give 5 stars to a book that feels the need to use another writer’s work as a crutch.

Still, Cinder was outstanding and well worth the listen and the narration was top notch.

Cinder Needs A Movie

This book and series had everything I would look for in the perfect scifi movie. Cinder stoled my heart from the very beginning. I love the story of Cinderella and if you do Cinder and the rest of the series is 100% for you.

Cinderella story gone WILD

The book started as a twist on the Cinderella story but took on some strange and fun twists. I really enjoyed it and think the narration was a big plus.

Holy Crap

Any additional comments?

This story threw me and it was awesome. The whole series is fun and enchanting. These books are not dark, like a lot of fiction/fantasy novels, so that was a nice change of pace.
