First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer, a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

Story
Captains Courageous is Rudyard Kipling’s classic fable of a boy’s initiation into the fellowship of men, played out on the high seas of the late 1800s. When he falls overboard from a luxury liner, Harvey Cheyne, the spoiled son of an American millionaire, is rescued by a small New England fishing schooner. To earn his keep, Harvey must prove his worth in the only way the skipper and his hardy crew will accept: through the grueling mastery of a fisherman’s skills.

Great Start To A Series!
This audiobook is great fun!! It's really exciting and so well-performed!! Mary is orphaned young in London and is forced to join a street gang for survival. But, her real dream is to see the world - and so she chops off her hair and becomes a ship boy for the H.M.S. Dolphin. While the story does take a few predictable turns, there are some surprises here, too. The characters (excluding the villains) are all likable - and I definitely am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series!
The audio performance is really stellar - between the accents, the singing - it's great! The same woman reads the whole series, so I know where my Audible credits will be going! I really like it - and both my mom and a co-worker have listened to the whole series, too, which only adds to the fun!

Not just for young adults.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Well written, old fashion yarn with pathos, humor, danger and villainy. The sailor that goes after Jack in the rope locker took the story out of the realm for older children, 11-13 but a teen could manage the ramifications of the antagonists, Bliffil and Sloat. The performance was excellent. One of audible’s best.

Great Fun!
I enjoy all 12 works of this series but this is one of the best of the litter. I have read AND listened to this book several times & I find I like Ms Kellgren's participation better each time. She is one of the best narrators out there. I also admire the attention to detail as Jacky states her cockney accent becomes more noticeable when she is excited or scared. The gradual refinement of Jacky's speech over the course of the series is also quite admirable. The book is well worth the read & borders on compulsory as a listen.
