Publisher's summary

Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That's fine by her, as long as her beloved twin brother, Lugh, is around. But when a monster sandstorm arrives, along with four cloaked horsemen, Saba's world is shattered. Lugh is captured, and Saba embarks on an epic quest to get him back.

Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the world outside of desolate Silverlake, Saba is lost without Lugh to guide her. So perhaps the most surprising thing of all is what Saba learns about herself: she's a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. And she has the power to take down a corrupt society from the inside. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization.

Blood Red Road has a searing pace, a poetically minimal writing style, violent action, and an epic love story. Moira Young is one of the most promising and startling new voices in teen fiction.

Great voice

The story itself is a little odd, but the voice in which it is told is so, so, so impressive! The style of the writing conveys the main character's personality perfectly; I'm jealous that I could never write something so well. It was a lot of fun to read a dystopian future novel told in the voice of someone who felt like she was from the wild west.

Fans of Graceling and The Hunger Games will love!

Saba and her family live in a desolate wasteland and when her brother goes missing, she goes on a quest to find him. Along the way, she gains sidekicks (whether she wants to or not) and sees that there is, in fact, “civilization” outside of her home. Holy wow, yall. Saba is one bad mother —-! With the blurb on the cover saying that this is “better than The Hunger Games”, Blood Red Road had a lot to live up to. But did it actually meet my expectations? YES, it did.

It was so unique. I listened to it on audiobook and it was clear that Saba had a heavy accent. I’ve talked to people who have read the book and they have said that the frequent mispellings to show the accent were very distracting so if that’s something that you think might distract you, definitely try the audiobook. I really enjoyed the voice actor.

Blood Red Road was beautifully crafted and I can’t wait to read its sequel, Rebel Heart, which comes out in October 30th, 2012. Fans of Graceling’s Katsa and The Hunger Games’ Katniss, will love Saba!

Cumbersome and clunky.

Definitely not better than "Hunger Games" trilogy. Characters were predictable, juvenile, and shallow. Absence of significant character development and not enough in-depth revealing of their thought and emotional processes causes me to not connect or invest in the story. Plot was slow and cumbersome. The narrator's attempt at a southern accent was distracting and irritating. Won't be continuing the trilogy.

Enjoyable with some annoying parts

Who was your favorite character and why?

I enjoyed Jack's character but hated how Heather made him sound the same throughout the entire book, as if his only personality was sly and/or flirty.

What does Heather Lind bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her southern charm.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The cave scene between Saba and Jack, when he threw the torch down (you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there).

Any additional comments?

As mentioned before, Heather's interpretation of Jack was very annoying. As if he were flirting 24/7, even when they were fighting creatures or yelling. I think his voice would have sounded much differently to me had I read it myself. I also don't like how the main character acted so childish and got so offended, by everything, all the time. And her 'lust' for her brother made me think of Cersei and Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones. Overall, though, the story was good, and I plan on reading (listening) to the next book in this series.

Dont wast a credit!

Would you try another book from Moira Young and/or Heather Lind?

no

What was most disappointing about Moira Young’s story?

The story was slow and never caught me up in it at all

How could the performance have been better?

no clue

What character would you cut from Blood Red Road?

Saba

Any additional comments?

I read a lot of similar books - and usually enjoy them even if it takes a little while - but this book was bad from start to finish.
There was no reason for the "attraction" between the two main characters - and the relationship with her brother bordered on creepy

Improves on the book

I read the book Blood Red Road upon its release last year and liked it a lot. It has a different vibe than the other YA dystopians on the shelf and it’s one I recommend frequently. The author’s distinctive writing style translates well to audio, and I think I enjoyed listening to the book even more than reading it. The story holds up well and is as action packed and intense as ever.

Blood Red Road is the story of a girl named Saba whose life falls apart when four cloaked horsemen kidnap her twin brother Lugh. She sets out to rescue him, and much to her dismay her little sister is along for the ride. Saba and her family have lived in isolation in the sandstorm-stricken Silverlake, and now she has to venture into the scary unknown to try to keep her promise to her brother. On her journey she finds out what she’s really made of as her character faces several dangerous challenges.

Saba ‘s strength and determination made me root for her. She rises to every challenge and doesn’t back down from her chosen path – a true survivor. She’s not perfect, and she still has a lot to learn, but I liked seeing her come into her own and grow throughout the book.

Along the way Saba meets several characters on her journey, some more helpful than others. The secondary characters fill in some of the missing details in Saba’s knowledge about the politics of their world. Some of the characters are fairly mysterious and I hope to find out more about them in the sequel. I also liked the dynamic between Saba and her love interest Jack and am curious to see how that progresses.

One thing that tripped me up a little when I read it the first time is the writing style. Saba’s character can’t read or write and her character’s dialogue is written phonetically. I found it a bit of a challenge to get through initially, but eventually I was caught up in the story and appreciated the style choice. With the audiobook, Heather Lind narrates with an accent and makes it easier to get immersed in the story. She gives a distinct voice to all the characters and brings them to life. Lind does a nice job portraying Saba in her different emotional states, and also Jack sounds just about how I’d imagine he’d sound. In this case, I think the audiobook experience improves upon the book and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Though I like all the action and adventure of the entire book, the first half sticks with me more. Listening to it again helped me to fill in some of the holes in my memory from the second half, getting me up to speed for the sequel. Being the first book of a trilogy, there are a lot of mysteries left unsolved, though the book is still pretty satisfying on it’s own. I’m looking forward to the rest of this series, and think Blood Red Road has the potential to be a very cool movie.

It's a very good story, but...

...the book is written as if by a twelve-year-old who stopped school in the fourth grade. The dramatic action scenes are read as if by a bored teenager. If I didn't have the book in which to read along, there's no way that I could have tolerated this audio book for very long.

My Top Recommendation

This book (and the rest of the series) is the best listening experience I’ve ever had. There’s no other way to describe it other than totally visceral and sensual. Ever emotion and beat is perfect described by the writer, and perfectly perfumed by the reader.
