    "Not bad"

I listened to this book because my daughter is reading it. I picked it up and was drawn in pretty quickly.

I enjoyed the perspective of Ethan, who has been "going along" his whole life with his small town community, though he doesn't quite feel like he belongs. The story mostly kept me engaged, until the gothic aspect became too over the top. At that point, I just got through it, more than enjoyed it. But I'm not the target audience, so I can't complain so much about that.

I will say that I tried to read another Young Adult book that my daughter is reading, and couldn't get past the first chapter, due to bad writing. I liked the writing here, again, until it became too melodramatic toward the end.

The reader was very good, though I am starting to identify a new pet peeve... if the narrative is first person, then the accent shouldn't change dramatically between the narration and his speaking voice. (Southern accent when he speaks, but not when he narrates in first person) This is about the third book in which I've noticed this trend, which I find distracting.

"Great book for teens, meh book for adults"
What disappointed you about Beautiful Creatures?

This is a great book for teen readers. As an adult, I did not enjoy it as much. It has great sub-characters. I adore the main character, Ethan. The female protagonist, Lena, is annoying, overly emotional, negative, skeptical, and just not as inspiring as she could be. Ethan makes up for it. It's still a good book.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

Great performance. The story is actually narrated by a guy and a girl. Both narrators are excellent.

    Any additional comments?

The audio version has an extra 30 minutes at the end which is an interview with the two authors. It's fantastic. I really enjoyed hearing the personal joke references in the acknowledgments and the conversation between the editors and the authors.
What made this audiobook so different from other audiobooks I have tried is that it has 1) a soundtrack, 2) it has sound effects, 3) it has special effect sounds that go along with the story. The additions made it a real treat. I was impressed by the specially written song.

    "Beautiful Literature/PNR/YA, NOT another twilight"

This was a beautiful love story which warmed my heart. Not like the twilight garbage. Ive read reviews which make the claim of it trying market in on the twilight...blah blah...No, just no. Then the reviewer goes to state they won't continue. Ive read all four books, and now reading the spinoff "Dangerous Creatures". Its not. If anything its a COUNTERWEIGHT to the twilight non-literature, non sense. This is pretty good literature. And I immensely enjoyed all four books. Its is my favorite YA series. And one of my favorite books I own, considering I own well...a lot of books. Audio, digital and real.

I don't normally write reviews but I couldn't stand to have such a good book compared or, even worse, called a ripoff of twilight. Which was ,in essence, poorly held propaganda for abstinence and later blatant propaganda against women's right to choose. This book makes those kind of people look foolish. Margaret Stohl received her Master's from Stanford University (Ivy League). Meyer received her B.A. from Brigham Young University (barely mediocre christian college)...I need say no more.

"Love torn teens against the odd try to save other!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Beautiful Creatures to be better than the print version?

I never read the printed version and after listening to the audio I never will. It's a classic Romeo and Juliet story if Juliet had magic powers and Romeo was merely human. Still it's not an awful story. It keeps you just enough interested that you want to get to the end even if it's a little predictable. I am not sure I would be willing to sit through a book two of this series though, I am not sure there is anything left to say. Yes there mystery as Ian builds the mystery out of mostly his dreams and talking to his girlfriend about how and the if's of spellcasters and the meaning of her kind of curse. Is she destined to go black or could she go white. Honestly I didn't really care that much the way the story was told.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I guess Ian was because he was the story teller of the story and you saw the story through a 17 year old hormonal teenage boy. Who was a little bit more than your average jock air head and was a deep thinker. He always thought before acting which is different from most 17 year hormonal driven teenage boys I have known in my life.

Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?

He had a good southern accent that went with Ian and made his story a little more to your liking but honestly in parts because the story dragged in some places and was predictable in others it wasn't his narration that was the downfall of the story. But don't take me the wrong way I still gave it 4 stars so it was awful either.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

To ill fate teens must cross the boundaries between the human and magic worlds to maintain there love. Or something as equally corny like that.

    Any additional comments?

I gave this audio book 4 stars. But I was being generous. It's not awful and is interesting in places. I actual did enjoy most of it when it wasn't a classic Romeo/Juliet teenage angst romance novel. Other than that the magic paranormal parts were interesting and imaginative. I like the librarian best in the story. Over I call it a 4 star book.

Listen mostly to urban fantasy and suspense/thrillers but also enjoy mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, adventure, classic, modern, spiritual or general literature. And I always like a bit of romance in any of my stories.

"It's the performance that makes this special"

The story itself is good. It's above average for YA; above average for urban fantasy; above average for a love story. The characters are well developed. The setting is well developed. The story is well told. Its one fault is it goes on a bit long. But it's the performance that makes this audiobook stand out. That's saying something because it includes the things that usually make me cringe: music, sound effects and multiple readers. But Kevin Collins does an amazing job as Ethan as well as nearly every other character. The one exception is that of Lena. He does a marvelous job of portraying her but unfortunately the voice he uses is nearly the same as Ethan without the accent. Since a lot of time is spent with the two talking to each other you need to pay attention or risk having to figure out who's talking. Normally this isn't too difficult based on the context but occasionally I had to rewind. The music is a song written specifically for this production from the song in the story and adds greatly to the atmosphere. My biggest complaint with sound effects are that they can drown out the narrator but that is never the case with this book. They also add to the ambiance without trying to take over for a lacking performance. Even the section where it switches to another reader is done perfectly. Normally switching readers, especially when switching from a man to a woman as in this case, I find jarring. The reader they chose to compliment Kevin does exactly that; compliment him. Her voice and style are very similar to what he used so it flowed smoothly. This is one of those rare books that I highly recommend as better to listen to than to read.

    "A Fantastic Book"
Would you listen to Beautiful Creatures again? Why?

Perhaps, but not soon! The Movie was fantastic and the book even better!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Beautiful Creatures?

I like when Lena goes Dark at random times throughout the book.

Have you listened to any of Kevin T. Collins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he did a great job.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I laughed a lot!

    Any additional comments?

This book was very long and had way more than the movie. I suggest this book to anyone and everyone!
