Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

Yes, it's so intriguing.
it was so very smooth and down to earth yet packed with many twists and turns.
His voice was so dimensional and it wasn't completely annoying for a heavy southern drawl.
I am glad I started listening to this book before I seen it coming on tv. If I would have watched the movie I would have never got the book. The movie was flat and the southern drawl was taken far to harshly. I have listened to the second book plus dark dreams as well and have now started on beautiful chaos. so exciting!
I got this book because I wanted something light and easy and I usually enjoy YA fiction. I just thought that everything was a little to far out of my realm of possibility and so outlandish that while I liked it enough to finish the book, I won't be revisiting the series.
The incidental music was distracting and the plot was perhaps a bit too young for me.
Sometimes I like YA romance, good vs evil books, even though I'm in my 50's. I wouldn't put it in the top 10 of the YA books I've read, but it's probably in the top 20's. While this is a good stand alone book, it is a series. I've bought the second book, and as long as it doesn't go to deep into the teenage romance stuff and the second book is pretty good I may continue the series.
I really enjoyed this read/listen. There is so much to love about it. The theatrics were refreshing. I will look for more audio books from the this author, this narrarator and producer, lol. I chose this book cause i had watched the movie, but this book is nothing like the movie. They are so different from each other it could be a whole different story. 17 hrs of joy!
The song 16 moons plays instead of just being read, glass breaks, rain sounds. Its like listening in hd.
Every bit of his performance was awesome
Ethans connection with his father, and how the loss of his mother distroyed thier relationship
I found the ending predictable, but even if it hadn't been predictable it would still have been a letdown. There were also far too many loose ends... and not the kind that lead to a follow-on book, but more like things left hanging that the author didn't realize were hanging.
The performance was interesting in that it integrated things like an important song AS a song with music. However, it also haphazardly included other sound effects like slamming doors and thunderstorms. Sometimes they'd include the sounds and sometimes not, without rhyme or reason. Also, the audio mixing made it hard to hear some of the dialogue over some of the thunderstorm soundtrack.
About a third of the way through, I decided I would sit through the remainder to see how things went so I wouldn't have that "I wonder what happened?" question in the back of my mind. That's the ONLY reason I listened to the rest, though.
The romance aspect of this book, which is what I was mainly drawn to, was very poorly done. It was much too one-sided as far as having insight into the inner thoughts of the two protagonists.
I also found the whole "the adults don't know what they're doing" aspect annoying. J. K. Rowling pulled that off well with her Hogwarts books, but this was played up too much in this book.
Fairly highly as the performance is so good and the story is woven in such a way that I just had to find out what was going to happen. Even though this is not a particularly original tale, it has enough twists to keep a reader/listener wanting more.
I love the scene at the dining table when all the family are gathered and Ridley is trying to cause trouble.
I loved that he had a slight accent, but not too much, I also liked the fact that he sounded young without being juvenile.
I felt mesmerized, something about the music, the 16 song and the story itself.
I can't wait to read the next part of this story.
Yes, because it is a great story
I really liked the music in the background for some parts
No, not yet.
the music really helped
Anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book. ~ Author Unknown
Sadly this book sparked nothing in me. It looked interesting. My "young adults" were interested in it. In the end we all had the same comments... this book is flat. There is no dimension, no character development that allows you to develop empathy and become engaged.
We all love to read and will try almost anything but we all put this book down in disappointment. It reads more like someones dry retelling of events than an immersive journey through experiences and emotion.
I really wanted to like this book but was sadly disappointed.
I like any books that hook you within the first chapter. If a love story is involved even better.
I think so. I melted into the story because Kevin T. Collins did such a great job.
I honestly can not pick just one.
His emotion and accents are amazing. Every character has a different voice it is truly amazing. I can't believe he did the book by himself.
Yes and then wanted another one to listen to all in one setting and another.
Do not get this book if you are expecting it to be like the movie. Because, this book is 800 million times BETTER than the movie. If you do get this book you will not regret any moment of it.
I may listen to this one again...it is so much better than the movie!
I love a good fantasy even if it is a teen fiction. I want to fall into a story and escape reality and I escaped.
Kevin T. Collins is my favorite narrator. He is so good at bringing the characters to life!!
