"so much better than the movie"

I listen to this book first and really did enjoy it. As soon as I was finished I decided to go rent the movie was very disappointed. They simply removed about three major characters, and of the ones remaining they chopped this down to the point where it was almost not the same story. Granted I'm almost always a believer in the book is better than the movie but in this regards it's night and day...or maybe dark and light

    "Unexpectedly thrilled about this book"

I had no idea what to expect but I was drawn in within the first chapter and couldn't stop listening. The story line is semi-unique and very well written. Details were impeccable and the characters are so well formed throughout the entire book. I've read a number of super natural style books and truly enjoyed this twist

I have some of the same complaints others have about this book, such as the mean girls high school thing. What really irritates me (and I've seen it other places in hollywood or various entertainment outlets) is how everyone seems to think hurricanes just happen out of nowhere. Sure, this is probably a pet peeve of mine but really, can you not at least read an article on it if you are going to put it in a book? Hurricanes don't just sneak up and surprise you. Just living in a hurricane zone does NOT mean every thunder storm is a hurricane during hurricane season. A thunderstorm is a thunderstorm. At least the southern accents weren't offensive like others I've listened to. That rant being over, I didn't think the the book was as bad as others have said, although it is unrealistic.

    "Not bad"

I listened to this book because my daughter is reading it. I picked it up and was drawn in pretty quickly.

I enjoyed the perspective of Ethan, who has been "going along" his whole life with his small town community, though he doesn't quite feel like he belongs. The story mostly kept me engaged, until the gothic aspect became too over the top. At that point, I just got through it, more than enjoyed it. But I'm not the target audience, so I can't complain so much about that.

I will say that I tried to read another Young Adult book that my daughter is reading, and couldn't get past the first chapter, due to bad writing. I liked the writing here, again, until it became too melodramatic toward the end.

The reader was very good, though I am starting to identify a new pet peeve... if the narrative is first person, then the accent shouldn't change dramatically between the narration and his speaking voice. (Southern accent when he speaks, but not when he narrates in first person) This is about the third book in which I've noticed this trend, which I find distracting.

"Great book for teens, meh book for adults"
What disappointed you about Beautiful Creatures?

This is a great book for teen readers. As an adult, I did not enjoy it as much. It has great sub-characters. I adore the main character, Ethan. The female protagonist, Lena, is annoying, overly emotional, negative, skeptical, and just not as inspiring as she could be. Ethan makes up for it. It's still a good book.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

Great performance. The story is actually narrated by a guy and a girl. Both narrators are excellent.

    Any additional comments?

The audio version has an extra 30 minutes at the end which is an interview with the two authors. It's fantastic. I really enjoyed hearing the personal joke references in the acknowledgments and the conversation between the editors and the authors.
What made this audiobook so different from other audiobooks I have tried is that it has 1) a soundtrack, 2) it has sound effects, 3) it has special effect sounds that go along with the story. The additions made it a real treat. I was impressed by the specially written song.

    "Beautiful Literature/PNR/YA, NOT another twilight"

This was a beautiful love story which warmed my heart. Not like the twilight garbage. Ive read reviews which make the claim of it trying market in on the twilight...blah blah...No, just no. Then the reviewer goes to state they won't continue. Ive read all four books, and now reading the spinoff "Dangerous Creatures". Its not. If anything its a COUNTERWEIGHT to the twilight non-literature, non sense. This is pretty good literature. And I immensely enjoyed all four books. Its is my favorite YA series. And one of my favorite books I own, considering I own well...a lot of books. Audio, digital and real.

I don't normally write reviews but I couldn't stand to have such a good book compared or, even worse, called a ripoff of twilight. Which was ,in essence, poorly held propaganda for abstinence and later blatant propaganda against women's right to choose. This book makes those kind of people look foolish. Margaret Stohl received her Master's from Stanford University (Ivy League). Meyer received her B.A. from Brigham Young University (barely mediocre christian college)...I need say no more.

What made the experience of listening to Beautiful Creatures the most enjoyable?

The voice reading for Ethan is spot on in my eye. The story line is wonderful and keeps you intrigued.

The way the Author describes the scenes in such detail that you can see the clouds move in your mind.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Lena shows Ethan her thoughts in words on her ceiling.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Love it!!

    Any additional comments?

I wish they would turn this into a TV series.
