Awakened: House of Night, Book 8 | [P. C. Cast, Kristin Cast]

Awakened: House of Night, Book 8

Zoey and the gang are back fighting evil (well, duh, that’s what being a High Priestess is all about) but with a variety of romantic intrigues to distract them, it’s a wonder they can get anything done! Zoey’s got some serious work to do at the House of Night if only she could concentrate....

    "Not to young for me!!"

I am in my early 40's and everyone said this series was for teenagers. I don't know what that says about me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the series. So don't be put of.
The characters really come alive throgh the series. I found myself looking forward to read or listen to the next one throughout.

    "More frustrated than Awakened"

I relistened to the previous seven books before launching into Awakened and this may have been a mistake on my part, because listening to Awakened I felt the story was becoming repetitive and possibly over stretched in order for the authors to achieve their aim of making the story last twelve books.

I was frustrated with the characters as it seems they haven?t really grown over the last seven books as the authors would like you to believe, the same mistakes are being repeated by different characters in different circumstances. There are some issues that were barely touched on and could have had a bit more depth to them and the banter between the main characters that is usually threaded throughout the books was minimal in this instalment. Maybe this was down to the constant fleeting between characters, which led to a lack of direction.

I would have given this book two stars but decided on three thanks to some parts which made me laugh outloud. About three quarters of the way through the book I felt the pace had picked up and for a short while, was unable to stop listening. The end of the book however, was a disappointment as there wasn?t enough of a thread to give me the usual eagerness for the next book.

I?m just hoping Awakened is a mediocre bridge to give closure to events that took place in the previous books and book nine will follow its title and will be destined to reengage and fulfil the promises that this series has to offer.

"A FEW ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS TO SALLY'S REVIEW"

I agree with what Sally’s review already said. Additionally, I am concerned that some themes are beginning to get quite heavy-handed.

For example, the feminist message is being overplayed. Of course, as a series of books for girls, it is important to have leading heroines – nothing wrong with that. But the role of males is now roughly equivalent to that of dogs – sometimes dangerous, but mostly loyal and faithful friends. Never clever enough to best a female, of course, even a very young one. And never entirely trustworthy. While the evil done by some of the male figures might be inspired by outside evil, these males are nevertheless incapable of resisting it.

What is more, there is now a very disturbing underlying message of fathers being evil, but mothers being inevitable good and loving (even if they have temporarily allowed themselves to be misled by a husband – an untrustworthy male, of course).

In a similar vein, the whole Christian religion seems reduced to the Virgin Mary, with male figures (including Jesus) apparently non-existent (or not worth a mention). The hint that the Virgin Mary may actually be the goddess Nyx seems to push the message a little too far.

This is really getting quite heavy-handed and, at times, quite disconcerting. I doubt that a series of books written for young males would get away with portraying the opposite sex in such a negative or inferior manner.
