Publisher's Summary

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead. So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now armed with his father's mysterious and deadly atheme, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage. She still wears the dress she wore in the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, it is now stained red and dripping with blood.

Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home. Yet she spares Cas's life.

    "Good story, terrible narrator"
What did you like best about Anna Dressed in Blood? What did you like least?

This story was really fun...Just make sure you're not eating while you're listening! Some descriptions of the fights/attacks are gross (but good!).

Good character arcs, interesting twists at the end.

Would you be willing to try another one of August Ross’s performances?

August Ross is a bad narrator because he basically sounds like a terrible actor. He is awkward. Unfortunately, I think his reading loses a lot of the humor of Cas.

    "I was hopeful"

The narrator had a really weird delivery a lot of his dialogue. It was so distracting that I can never only get into the book. The concept was interesting, The author should decided whether it was a adult Book or a preteen book.

    "Interesting Twisty Story, Terrible Narration"

Every time I thought I could predict what would happen next, the plot through me for a loop! Genuinely enjoyed the story and all the characters within.

But the narrator didn't have enough range. His voice for a teenage girl was vapid, even though the character was not. Similar to the male best friend. His Haitian accent was non-existent, so I was a bit disappointed.

But I did enjoy the story.

"Great story for YA readers but ..."
How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration was a bit off - full of odd pauses and unnatural emphasis on words. Also the accents and voice characterizations were awful and distracting.

Was Anna Dressed in Blood worth the listening time?

No. Do not listen to the audio version of this book. This is a great book for YA readers looking for a "creepy" read, but this audio version does not do the story justice and is very disappointing.

    "Adequate story, awful narrator"
What did you like best about Anna Dressed in Blood? What did you like least?

I liked the concept of the book, but the narrator is awful.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Anna Dressed in Blood?

The opening ghost, the hitchhiker, was really cool.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

This narrator was terrible. He pauses at odd moments every 2-5 words and sounds like almost everything he says is a question. It's like the Family Guy's imitation of William Shatner, except with a voice that sounds like he's barely out of adolescence. I would have thought it was a self-published author who asked his friend to narrate the book for him.

Was Anna Dressed in Blood worth the listening time?

    No

    "Decent story, lackluster performance"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was certainly fun and entertaining. Nothing exceptional, and I doubt I'll read the sequel, but I enjoyed the story throughout. I don't feel like my time was wasted, and I don't regret the purchase, though in retrospect I'd opt for another medium than the audiobook. I have to agree with the previous reviewers that the performance left much to be desired.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The writing and horror imagery was fun and creepy, and the plot was overall well-constructed. To be honest, it's the sort of story where the more you think about it, the less sense it makes. But it's forgivable because the book's goal is to be entertaining, funny, and a little bit unsettling, and it succeeds on all three fronts. I laughed out loud several times, cringed at the gross-outs, and found myself eager to discover what happens next.

As for least interesting: I felt the characters were underdeveloped, and sometimes unbelievable in their willingness to sort of go with the flow, despite the over-the-top paranormal events occurring around them.

What didn’t you like about August Ross’s performance?

When he was reading the narrative, he did a fine job. Character voices, however, came across as cartoon-like and annoying. Carmel sounded like a dumb valley girl, and I found myself disliking her solely as a result of Ross's reading. Similarly, he assigned pretty much every member of the supporting male cast this "dumb jock" voice, even in cases where it didn't make much sense. I mentioned above that I felt the characters were underdeveloped and unbelievable, and I feel the performance contributed that that impression. I wonder what I would have thought of them had I read, rather than listed to, Anna Dressed In Blood.

Was Anna Dressed in Blood worth the listening time?

I don't regret it, but I unfortunately can't recommend it.

"Interesting story, performance almost ruined it."
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

It depends on whether or not you're able to get past the production and listen to the story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His voice was distracting from the beginning and the production had a slight tin can quality. His character voices were all pretty bad. He couldn't even do a good second man's voice. Anna's voice was supposed to have a Finnish accent, but it sounded like a little girl with a lisp.

    "good story too much profanity"
    Any additional comments?

I liked the story, but this is a youth book and there was frankly unreasonable profanity. This is a book I would not have my kids listen to or read. I don't understand why young kids and teens are being bombarded with this but I find it offensive.

    Any additional comments?

I really wanted to like this book because I have a hard time finding new good books for my high school library. Unfortuately for this book, I listened to it right after listening to Terry Prachett's "I Shall Wear Midnight," which is outstanding. "Anna" is just time-killing brain candy; although that's sufficient for some students. The reader of "Anna" focuses so much on pronunciation that he sounds robotic, and he's not very good at creating different voices. In short: don't expect much.

"Interesting Story Let Down By Poor Narration"

I was really excited to start listening to this book when I found it. The idea of a ghost hunter going up against a big bad legend is something that really captured my imagination. I pictured myself curled up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate, listening to a great ghost story.

What I should have done was buy the Kindle version, curl up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate, and read it myself.

A story that had great potential to keep me in its spell, tense and anxious for the next chapter, the next paragraph, the next word, instead had me anxious to just get through it and be done. The narrator seemed inexperienced and read way that came across as stilted and unsure. His unnatural speech patterns and strange choices for the characters' voices, frustrated me and kept me from losing myself in the story. It's a shame because he has a nice voice.

In the end I doubled the playback speed to get through the book. I'll read the second in the series myself and see how I feel about it before making any decisions about the author.
